To be Changed
Bee—The historic Khoads and Townsend House, at Second and J Streets,
is to be altered in such a manner that
the old-timers will not reeognize it
when they happen into that part of
the city. For years the Rhoads &
Townsend House was a noted resort
for sporting men and politiclans.
Some of the biggest political guns of
California made it their headquarters
whenever they came to Sacramento.
The late “Frank” Rhoads, who was a
power in politics for many yeare, was
one of the proprietors of the place,
and people in allwalks in life visited
the fameus resort.
Women who sought positions in the
solvcls 45 teachers, and coven preach=
ers who wanted some little political
backing, went to the place at Second
and J. Streets to get the help of Mr.
Rhoads. The house was also the headquarters of sporting men, both
“straight” and ‘‘crooked.’* There they
could meet congenial spirits, and there
they were always able to borrow “a
piece of money” when things were not
coming jast right. Before the place
became a sporting house it was used
by a banking institution. Af one
time the Oity Jail was located in the
old building, and it was from. that
place that a couple of highway robbers
were taken by a mobone night and
lynched, After “Frank” Rhoads lost
his political nip the place began to
rua down. Business grew from bad
to worse, and in the last few years it
has been a hard matter to take in
evough cash to pay the rent and ordi>
nary running expenses. In the palmy
days, when “Frank” Rhoads and Isadore Townsend were at the head of
the house, the clubrooms were furoished in regal style, but the wear and
tear of years has made the interior of
the place look shabby.
The old sporting bouse will in a
short time be changed into the home
of the Pacific Postal Telegraph and
Cable Company.
