careless as to what goes into the
stomach, but the one who would make
all his movementstend toward health
and possible greatness, cannot afford
to drink coffee. Postum Food Ooffee
is used by those who would have good
health.
A majority of the best and most
careful athletic trainers are pronounced
in their recommendations of Postum
Food Coffee because it gives the
athletes a warm, delicious beverage
and, better than that, it supplies in
liquid form the selected foud elements,
which nature uses to build in nerve
and muscle.
Voss’ Sawmill 1 to Be Moved.
‘This fall or early in the spring L.
‘Voss will move bis sawmill from its
present site on the Quaker Hill road
north of Greenhorn creek down into
tthe main canyon halfa mile away. It
is estimated that there are fifty million feet of timber on the land that
Mr. Voss has in this canyon, and there
has never been an ax putintoit. Most
of the finest trees are on the steep
banks and are 200 feet high. Mr. Voss
proposes to build a twenty-foot dam in,
the creek and this will back up the
water so as to make a big mill pond. ~

shotgan, is in jail here awaiting his
preliminary hearing. He has hired W.
D. Longas his lawyer and will contest the accusation. It is expected
that he will bring counter-charges to
the effect that Mrs. Moran got after
him with a loaded pistol and thre:tened to pump him full of lead. ‘
The Provic ence Prospering.‘The Providence mine is said by mining men who are posted to be looking
better now than ever before in its history. The ore bodies are large and of

Deafness Cannot be Cured
by local applications . an they cannot
reach the disease portion of the ear.
There is only one way to cure deafness,
and that is by constitutional remedies.
Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tabe. When this tube is inflamed you have a rumbling sound or
imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely. closed, Deafness is the result,
and unless the inflammation can be
taken out and this tube restored to its
normal condition, hearing will be deatroyed forever; nine cases out of ten
are caused by Oatarrh, which is nothing
but an-inflamed condition of the mucous surface.
We will give. One Sanared Dollars

evening as suddenly and effectually as
though the earth had opened and
swallowed him, is alarmed beyond expression at the continued absence of
the missing man. She says any stories
to the effect that he and she were in
the habit of quarreling, or that their
relations were anything but harmonious, are made out of whole cloth. “He

:. Man this morning. “He was uniformly
kind to me. He was sober and was
eager to obtain employment although
his health was far from good. He was
afflicted with asthma, and had been
quite feeble of late. Wednesday after.}moon he visited his cousin, Ephriam
Rassell of Piety Hil. He told him
that he was feeling poorly, but did not
appear down-hearted. As the five
o’clock train whistled he looked at his
watch and saying be must go back to
the hotel to dinner left with the remark
that in the evening he would see. Ephriam down town and give him the address of Thos. W. Jones to whom Ephrian desired to send a letter. *,hat,”
sad Mrs Russell this morning with
tears in her eyes, “is the last trace-I
can get of the poorman. I do not be.
lieve he has mude away with himself,
because it was not his nature to give up
easily. Iam certain he has not deliberately deserted:me, becanse he thought
too much of me, for that; I fear that
something terrible must have happened
to him—that perhaps he has fallen into
an old shaft or over a bank ‘Somewhere,
and has perished.” ,
Mr. Russell was born at Camptonville, Yuba county, his parents. being
highly respected people of that place.
A year ago he and his wife, who had
been residing at Granite Basin and
other parts of Plumas county, where
Mr, Russell was a hydraulic miner,
thought théy might better their condition by going where work was more
plentiful. They came first to Camptonville and then to this city, arriving
here last spring. Their hard luck followed them. Since coming here they
have seen hard lines, being able to get
but little employment and being out of
money most of the time.
Mrs. Russell says her husband had
on dark pants and a light brown coat
and vest when he left her. He is about
85 years old, of medium hight, weighs
161 pounds, has brown hair and asa ndy
mustache.

School Contract Let Last Night.
The City Board of Education held, a
meeting last night to open bids for the
contract to complete two rooms in the
basement of Washington schoolhouse.
Four bids were received. C.M. Buck
offered to do the work for $539, Frank
P. Williams for $608, O. A. Tompkins
for $691, and W. E. Rice for $649. The
latter failed to send either a certified
check or cash with his bid, so only the
first three were considered. The Board
decided to accept the bid of Mr. Williams, for $608, and the president and
s-cretary of the Board were authorized
to enter into a contract with him to do
the work which was commenced today.
The job is to be finished by the end of
the presentmonth. Mr. Buck gave
no‘ice that he would obtain legal advice as to the right of the Board to reject his bid, which was the lowest, and
he said he might contest the awarding
of the contract to Mr. Williams,
Cheaper Than Doctor Bills,
An unusually large number of our
citizeng are out of town this month enjoying themselves at various summer
resorts or in traveling. The number of
people who believe that it is cheaper to
take an annual vacation than it is to
pay doctor bills is yearly increasing.
Money Left For Charity,
Messrs. Brand and Walling, who collected $125.25 with which to pay for
the fireworks and music for Saturday
night's jollification, have paid all the
bills and .today turned into the treas-,
ury of the Benovolent Society a balance of $18.60 remaining in their hands.
