Naa EY a yew surroundings and unfamiliar order THE TRANSCRIPT. blished every evening except Eonieys and Legal Holi ays by BROWN & CALKINS. ~ B. P. BROWN. L. &. CALKINS, WEDNESDAY... AUG. 9, 1899. HELPING THE SUT, THUS at liao Enter the University. A number of Nevada county young people will enter the State University at Berkeley this year. ‘io them the vf things might be quite confusing, for the ways of the college are nut the ways uf the preparatory school, To become fairly launched amid tiered tape of the JYecorder’s office, the customs of the campus and the streets of Berkeley town is a labor which is a bugbear to many a timid Freshman. It wili be grateful news therefore to those prospective collegians that they can find men and women in the University who are willing to render them very practicalaid during the opening weeks of the term, aid which is wholly free aud unconditioned. If the new student ou arriving in Kerkeley will go first of all to Stiles Hall he will find there a complete directory of houses where room } and board may be obtained, studenis! who will pilot him over the town or campus, guide him througb the various steps of marticulation aud registration, and answer the multitude of questions which necessarily.urise. The list of boarding houses has been obtained by a personal house-to-house canvas and the information provided is complete and reliable. ‘there are some students who can not afford to pay from $18 te $25 per month. for . board and room. At it S:iles Hall they are brought together and ciubs ol eight or ten formed which often lower the cost of these items to $10 or $15 per month, and at the same time give pleasant homes. The College Young Meu’s aud Youug Women’s Obristian Association conduct this work. They strive in every way possible to meet the needs of the incoming men and women. ‘They will be glad to correspond with anyone desiring information before reaching Berkeley or will welcume a personu visit to.Stiles Hall at any time. Another important work conducted by the Assuciatiuus is the Students Employment Bureau. LITTLE, The WollKnown Female Physician Expires This Morning. Dr. Mary Elizabeth Little died at 2:45 o'clock this morning at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Forman of this city.” She was a native of Canada aged 54 years, 7 months.and 15 days. She leaves one son—Hazen Little of Santa Oruz. He is now en route here with a team and is expected to arrive this evening. The funeral is to take place from the Forman residence: at two o’clock Friday afternoon. Dr. Little was a member. of Evangeline Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. ‘She graduated in 1873 from the medical department of the Gollege at Ann Arbor, Michigan. In 1885 she arrived here in company with her husband, Capt. L. B. Little, an attorney who became a partner of Hon. Jobn Caldwell and died in March, 1890. Mrs. Little engaged in the general practice of mecicine until last fall when she suffered from an attack of spinal meningitis and subsequently was stricken with the grip. Of late she was considerably improved, but three days ‘ago evidences of renewed spinal irritation became manifest and a series of spasms set in. Dr. Little was a woman of keen intelligence and strong character. She left numerous warm friends in the community to mourn for her. ““ " = Was Beaten on Purpose, a Mr. Labouchere, in a recent onmber of Truth. tells a good story, about a legal friend of bis. The person coucerned is not significant, but the episode throws an interesting side light on Bveitish polities ‘as she is fabricated.” Yhe lawyer in question, although a master in handling judges and juries, was afraid of the hense of commons, to whieh be had recently been elected. His continued silence had hezun to excite remark. A matter was coming under diseussion which involved a good deal of law. Labonchere Said to bint: “Tf, you like, I will get ap and speak against the government view. You must jeer at me. 1 will complain of this and suggest that. us you are ap eminent lawyer, you should express your vbjections articulately. Then you. having prepared your speech, must get up and crush me.” This was arranged. When Labouchere laid down the law, his friend laughed. Labouchere looked indignant and continned. he friend uttered sarcastic “Hear, hears.’ At this Labonchere protested, sat down and invited. his political opponent to reply. The invitation was accepted, and the famous editor of Truth forced himself to look disconsolate over his own erushing defeat. Temporary Aberrations.
