From a long list. of general orders issued by Adjutant-General Barrett this
week the following extract is taken:
“Complaints from the Examining
Board reaching this office that Lieutenants are hardly ever given an opportunity to practically learn anything regarding drill and general matters per.
taining to the duty of a company officer, the attention of company commanders is respectfully called to this
fact, and they are directed to aliow the
Lieutenants of: the company an opportunity, not only to learn the duties of
their immediate position, but that they
, be given frequent opportunities to drill
their companies.”

“The readers of this paper will be
ypleased to learn that there is at least
.one dreaded disease that science has
been able to cure in all its stages, and
that is Catarrh. Hali’s Catarrh Cure
.is the only positive cure known to the
:medical fraternity. Catarrh being a
constitutional disease, requires a constitutional treatment. Hall’s Catarrh
@ure is taken internally, acting directly’tij6i thé blood and mucous surfaces of thé system, thereby destroying
the foundation of the disease, and . giving thé patient strength by building up
the constitution and assisting nature
in doing “its work. The proprietors
have so much faith in its curative
powers, that t 1ey offer One Hundred
Dollars for any case that it fails to
cure. Send for list of testimonials.

BETTER STREET LIGHTS,
Arrangements Will So Soon be Made For
Futting In Some Ares.
It is the expectation that before
Many months have elapsed the incandescent lamps now used for street
lighting will be replaced in the business
. portion of town with arc lamps of 2000
candle-power and that the few outlying portions of the city which are at
present insufficiently lighted will be
furnished with additional incandes;cents. Our enterprising City Trustees
are desirous of improving the service
as rapidly as the condition of the treasury will permit, and many business
men have volunteered to contribute
each month toward footing the bills.
The Electric Power Company offer to
furnish 25 all-night arcs at $200 a
month, running them on a line distinct
from the incandescents and putting. in
@ separate dynamo, which improvement
would cost the company an immediate
outlay of not less than $2500. This arrangement would give a perfect service
—in fact the best to be had fer any
money, as the new machinery and
lampewould have all the latest
and most approved improvements.
We now have 67 all-night incandescent street lamps, and our city ranks
as one of the best lit of any of the few
in the country that use only incandescents. For them we pay $108 a month,
which is the lowest price that any town
of its size on the coast pays for street
lighting. Many places. in California
with less population than we have pay
from $300 to $400 a month for less adequate service. The desire among our
people to have the best and most lights’
that we can reasonably afford to pay
for is quite general, and this feeling is
fortunately shared by our progressive
*. board of city fathers. Hence it is that
before the great meetings here of the
Grand Army Veterans and Native Sons
in April next Nevada City will be at
the front in this respect as it is in
everything else it sets out to do.

WILL SOON BE MARRIED,
dofferson E. Doolittle “an ‘and Miss Rebecca
densings, to Wed.
The Call says that the engagement of
Colonel Jefferson E. Doolittle and Miss
Rebecea Jennings has been formally
announced. The date for the wedding
has not yet been fixed, but it is said the
happy event will occur in the near
future and before the holiday season
has passed.
Miss Jennings is a daughter of the
late James H. Jennings, Capitalist and‘
founder of the First National Bank
and the California Cracker Company.
She is a charming blonde, and is one of
the favorites in a at ean in the
city.
Jefferson E. Doolittle ie one of the
most prominent men of the State. He
is lieutenant-colonel on the staff of
Governor Budd in the state militia, He
is a member of the board of directors of the State Mining Bureau, and
isalso a director of the State Normal
School. He is largely interested in
mining, and owns many good properties in the State. He is a member of
the Union League Club, and is popular
in social c:rcles in San Francisco.
A Great Number.
What would you do if war should
be declared tomorrow with a European
power? How would it change your
home life, the lives of your brother and
other relatives ? How would it affect
your business connections and business? What changes would it make
in financial, city, State and National
affairs? It is these interesting problems which a writer in the December
Cosmopolitan has undertaken to sketch
under the heading of “A Brief History
of Our Late,War With Spain,” at the
same time vividly describing the exciting scenes which would attend the
opening of hostilities. The same number of The Cosmopolitan has an article
on “The Well-Dressed Woman” by
Elsie de Wolfe, a contrast of the characters of Henry George .anhél Charles A.
Dana by John Brisben Walker, in
another place “The Lovers of Goethe,”
while Wells’ story, “The War of the
Worlds,” which has been so widely
read, reaches its conclusion in an unexpected way.

A Crazy Scheme.
A company has been formed in New
York with the avowed purpose of controlling the gold output of the country,
including the mines of Oalifornia, Mexico, Colorado and the Yukon. Local
mining men look upon the proposition
as the height of absurdity. The projectors might as well try to corner the
air of the world.
