TH GRAND JURY, Its Labors Concluded This Afternoon— Nothing Important Done, The Grand Jury concluded its labors at 2:40 o’clock this afternoon and submitted its report. Some of the justices of the peace in this township and Grass Valley are criticised for inflicting too light penalties, and the report says: “The courts are not maintained for the constant exercise of leniency toward criminals at the expense of the’tax payers. Fault is found because some of the court-bills are excessive, and officers —arewarned to exercise better judgment The practice of some of the justices in these two townships of giving some convicted persons’ time to raise the amount of their fines is condemned. . been at the California mine for some. The officers of Nevada City and Grass Valley are urged to enforce the law prohibiting minors from entering ~. galoons. The charges of perjury against Thos. Anderson and of obtaining money under false pretenses against Edward Conradt were ignored. The erection of an addition to the courthouse, to be used as a hall of records, is deemed advisable. __ District Attorney Riley is thanked for his courtesy to the jury. The various county officers are com. mended for the excellent imanner in which their various departments are conducted. A YBRY SAD CASE. A Young Woman Made a Depraved/ Drunkard by a Spell of Sickness. Annie McCabe, an unmarried Grass Valley woman 25 years old, was lodged in the county jail today to serve thirty days for being a common drunkard. Her case is asad one. She is most respectably connected, and her relations have done everthing they can think of to straighten her up, but without availHer craze for drink amounts to a mania. As a girl she was exemplary in her habits and had a bright mind: Three years ago she had anattack of typhoid fever and almost died. When she got around again her whole nature had d and her career of drunkenness . She became so low that she would stand in front of the postoffice at mail time and beg the throngs of men who came and went for small sums of money with which to buy liquor. There ’ is little chance that .she will ever recover from the mania. A Dearth of Shows. ‘Up to this time no large shows have been booked for the theater at this city during the present month. Until Grass Valley builds a theater we cannot expect to have many first-class attractions, as the expense of coming so far .off the main line td play a one-night :stand is heavier than the business will \warrant in mostinstances. Aside from tthis drawback Nevada City is rated as ‘one of the best show-towns on the coast. ‘ nae Old-Timers Pull Up Stakes. John Robinson and family, who for years have conducted the Plum Valley ranch in Sierra county near Pike City, have sold that property and today left this city for Monmouth, New Jersey, where they expect to live in future. The Robinsons have many friends in this part of the State who are sorry to ‘ gee them go away. Ready to Call Time. Everything.is about ready for the Beckman-Gilmore~ fight on Monday evening. Barney Schreiber Hartman, Riley Grannan Smith and Dan Stuart Webber, the promoters of the carnival of sport and charity, together with Wyatt Earp Russell, the referee, guar’ antee a hot time. Pay Day T: morrow. Tomorrow will be the monthly payday at most of the mines, the Harmony not paying till Monday. About $60,000 will be disbursed by the various companies, and as most of this money will be spentin Nevada City the holiday trade should be good from now on. Threatening Weather. ‘This morning’s weather forecast was: Cloudy and unsettled weather, generally without rain, tonight and Saturday. —_—_—__—— A Drove of Turkeys. It is his firm that put the heating and ventilating apparatus in Washington schvolhouse. The job has proved a perfect success in every respect. It heats and ventilates better even than the contractors said it would: The Smartsville correspondent of the Appeal says: Henry German, the wellknown liveryman of North San_ Juan, accompanied an Eastern party consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Hill and Miss Belle Mallison of Kansas City to this place last Sunday. The principal] purpose of their visit was to see for the first-time the beautiful green and golden fruit characteristic of the orange which grows so luxurious and], abundant in this vicinity. A Pioneer. Dying. ~ James Bottomley, a native of England aged 88 years, is dying at his home at Red Dog of pneumonia. He is one of the pioneer miners of Little York township, and the oldest man in that part of the county. He has been ill but a short time, but his condition is hope of his recovery. Those who have known him intimately for years say that Nevada county will lose one of her grandest old men when James Bottomley passes away. 2oe Looking Toward California. W. H. Mills, land agent of the Southern Pacific Railroad Company, states that the. prospects for California were never better than they are at present. Inquiries for California lands have been received from all parts of the Union, and indications are that there will be a great many visitors here from the Northwest: and from the Eastern States who will spend the winter, if not settle here permanently. Hitch in the Water Bonds. The eastern buyers of the ‘water bonds of this city have raised technical objections to the form of the bonds in one or two respects and want some slight changes made before paying over the money. This will cause a short delay, but the differences will doubtless be adjusted satisfactorily to all concerned. Boy’s Double Breasted Ulsters, with high collars. Nice goods. At all prices. He was.a member of the Italian Benevolent Society and San Jose Hussars. On the afternoon of August 9th the young couple went out fora walk and had reached a point on North Third street, near Santa Clara, when suddenly they were intercepted by Allender, who jumped from a bicycle he had been riding and made an attempt to talk to the girl. She would not listen to him and sought to get by him, when suddenly Allender whipped out a sixshooter and fired at her. The bullet took effect in the girl’s neck and she fell. Allender then fired a shot into her body as she lay’on the ground. Crossetti was right upon Allender and attempted to take the pistol away from him. The shooter then turned Syrup.
