Caused by Tragedy.
Reppine,December 9—Mrs. Delia
Rader has been for the second time
committed to the Napa Insane Asylum,
and this seems to be the finale of an
unusual family tragedy that had its
opening chapter five years ago. John
Rader was a goat and sheep raiser of
the Bald Hills section, near Gas Point.
fle and his neighbor, David Maupin,
Quarreled over pasture lands, As
Rader drew rein one day in the midst
of his children, Maupin shot him
dead from his saddle. Maupin was
acquitted. Mrs. Rader’s mind gave
way over grief for her husband, and
was committed to the Napa Asylam.
After a year she grew stronger and
was discharged. Recently she came
back to the family scenes and became
demented again, and several times
attem pted to kill herself.
Wassinerton, Dec. 9.—Mr. Hoar introduced in the Senate today a resolution directing the President to enter
into negotiations with foreign civilized countries for the purpose of setting aside some island in the Pacific
ocean to which anarchiste may be deported.
Perhaps a New Way
Andrew Carnegie’s. gifts for the
cause of popular education have been
so numerous and so large that even
the announcement that he is about to
donate $10,000,000 to aid in the work
of university extension attracts but
limited attention. Not until the details of the plan are made known, and
it is rendered clear how the money ia
to be spent, can an opinion be ventured on the true value of this gift, although Mr. Carnegie is practical and
shrewd and it is not likely that he
would give money to be wasted. The
great fault of most of the university
extension work is its superficiality ; it
spreads a thin, very thin, layer of culture over a very large surface and
sometimes it seems that the money already spent on it is hardly justified.
But probably Mr. Oarnegie has some
pian for utilizing this fund which will
make it of real value.
ow the People of Sangir Keep Time.
The people of Sangir, an island of the
Malay archipelago, keep time by the
aid of an hourglass formed by arranging two bottles neck to neck. The sand
runs out’in half an hour, when the bottles are reversed. Close by them a line
fs stretched, on which hang twelve
sticks marked with notches from one
to twelve, with a hooked stick, which
is placed between the hour last struck
and the next one. One of these glasses
keeps the time for each village, for
which purpose the hours are sounded
on a gong by a keeper.
Four Kinds of Pupils.
The Talmud says there are four kinds
of pupils—the sponge and the funnel,
the strainer and the sieve. The sponge
is’ he who taketh up everything, and
the funnel {s be who taketh in at this
ear and letteth out at that; the strainer
is he that letteth go the wine and retaineth the dross, and the sieve is he
that letteth go the bran and retaineth
the fine flour. The student who begins at least to wish to belong to the
last named class will not have been
sent to college in vain.
His Watchdog.
Mrs. Suburb—Ohb, my dear, that magnificent watchdog you brought home
yesterday is gone.
Mr. Suburb—BEh? Did he break the
chain?
“No; but an ugly looking tramp came
around and acted so terribly that I let
the dog loose, but instead of tearing
the tramp to pieces he went off with
him.”
“Great Scot! It must have been the
same tramp I bought him of.”

The Wie
bass tetany sveak evening J. J. Buyder, .
the well known vegeteble and fruit
dealer, whose place of business . ‘adjoins the hardware store of George E,
Turner, on Pine purchased ‘a
roll of wire netting from the latter.
The netting was placed in front of
the former’s stand in its compact form
and after awhile some passerby rolled
it down near the show window of the
hardware store. Mr. Snyder forgot
all abont his purchase when he closed . .
up for the night. Later on a Broadstreet business man happened along
and spied the wire roll, and concluded
that it had been overlooked by the
hardware men. To leave it, would
surely mean its loss before the advent of another day,so he took tke
roll home, as a precautionary measure. To make the story short, we will
state that the nettting was brought . back the next day and explanations
followed, amid much merriment on
the part of the business mep.
Mr. Snyder says he had given up
thinking about the matter, taking it
for granted that the fellow that stole
his turkeys recently took the netting
to pen in the Christmas birds and
keep them safe for the larder, ©

‘Happy Thought ef a Man In a Fix,
Ai’ operator for 4’ western railroad
who had served his company long and
well was called into the office one day
and asked if he thought he could hold
down the job of night dispatcher. He
promptly replied that he could and was
told to report for duty that night, and
his chief. instructed him itn what he
was todo. Just after the chief left the
office it began to blow and snow, and
the trains commenced to run late. The
new night dispatcher soon had developed a bad case of “rattles” and almost
cried. He did not want an accident,
and he could not handle the trains. So
a happy thought struck him. As fast
as a report came in he replied, directing
the conductor to take a siding and
wait for orders, and it was not a great
while until he had every train on the
division sidetracked. Then he took a
book, lighted his pipe and sat down to
wait for daylight. In the morning the
chief appeared with anxiety written all
over his face.
“Any accidents, Johnny?’ asked the
chief.
“Not an accident. I’ve got ’em all
on the sidetrack, snowed in and waiting for orders, and you will have to
get ’em out. I am going to blow this
job.” It took the chief and his force
nearly all day to get the trains straightened out and traflic resumed on the
road.—Ind'evrr cs News.
