I HRISTMAS is nearly here—Christmas, the day of good will and peace among men. It is, well to remember that there is not good cheer for all, even in times of the greatest prosperity. Let the world be ever so bright, there is always sickness and sorrow and suffering in it. The.glad anticipation of the coming good time, so‘near at hand, gives point to this story from Chicago: . “While the Thanksgivving dinner of turkey and trimmings was being prepared for the seventy fortunate inmates of the Chicago Home for Friendless Dogs and Cats, last Thursday, an unfortunate father, Charles F. Maloney, of 559 South State street, was trudging through the South division, carrying his diphtheria-stricken two-year-old daughter, in search of some asylum, home or place where she could be taken in and cared for. Refused admittance at hospital and dispensary, one after another, he finally reached a police station, whence he was directed to the health department, but the child died before he reached the Commissioner’s office.” In that great city; on Thanksgiving Day, there was*a haven for friendless dogs and cats, but noshelter or relief for a dying child. Worthless animals were housed and warmed aud fed by what is called charity, but this sick chiid, like the Son of Man, had nowhere to lay her head, and her young life went out while her stricken father was tramping the streets vainly seeking relief. The incident carries its lesson. It is a lesson that none should forget, especially at this season when the very festival we are to celebrate commemorates the commandment ‘Love ye one another.” The mass of people are neither heartless nor cruel, but they are thoughtless and selfish. Poverty and disease and wretchedness are not pleasant sights to. see, and people turn aside from them to lavish their gifts and generous impulses on those not in need. The lady ties a ribbon around the neck of her dog that would make some poor girl happy. The poor relation is given cast off clothing or some cheap trinket while the wealthy neighbor’ is remem=bered with jewels and silks or rare books and pictures. The world is snobbish as well as selfish. Even the rich toady to each other on God’s holiday, and mutually bespatter each other with presents and prasses, while the poor and friendless are neglected and forgotten. Yet Christ was born in.a manger and drew his associates—the Apestles of the Christian faith—from the lowly and the ignorant such simple folk as could not on the Saviour’s birthday find pewroom’ in many a fashionable church of a big city—God save the mark! The Christian charity that provides shelter and food for dogs and cats and lets the poor of humankind die in the streets is found in the Devil’s scripture. Christmas and Him in whose name is celebrated. The poultry raisers of Sonoma held a convention at Petalama. last week and decided toagain ask the Legislature to establish an experimental station in their county. Attention was called to the tmportancs of the indnstry in that part of the State and it was shown that in Petaluma and its immediate vicinity there were nearly a million bead of poultry, The Sonoma men consider that they are entitled to such a station, agricultara) stations being established in other parts of the State to investigate and help less important industries. Few people are aware of the magnitude of the poultry business that has been gradually developing in Sonoma county within the past few years. eo + ——___ To Play Basket Ball. The Blues and the Grays will play a game.of basketball in connection with Company O’s weekly social: on Saturday evening. Following is the line-up: Blues—W. Sigourney, bm; D. Doyle, rf; E. Dancing will commence at 8:30 o’clock sharp and the game will be commenced at 9:15 o’clock. Reciprocity Treaty. President Palma of Cuba expects to have the reciprocity treaty with the United States signed and ready to send to this country within a day or two. Then after it bas been confirmed by the United States Senate, he will ask the Cuban Senate to. act favorably upon it. It is not likely that it will go through thé United States Senate without a herd fight, for there are too many interests affected by the proposed tariff reductions. Ballestero’s Trial. The trial of J. R. Ballestero, which commenced Monday morning, is stil) occupying the’attention of the Superior Court. This afternoon the third witnesses for the prosecution was on the stand, aud it is probable that the prosecution will close their case today. The prosecution and defense are both beiug vigorously conducted. + e@e— “Baybyhood" for December. “Babyhood,” the standard nursery guide for mothers, begins with the December number. ite nineteenth: vol-ame. An ultimatum will be delivered tomortow asking for compliance with the demands of the British and German Ministers. All German and British subjects here were arrested today. : President Castro says the Venezuelan Government has not received an ultimatum from either country and claims that as none have been presented Venezuela consequently has never refused to settle them. “Great Britain’s action,” he says, “is without justification as we can not decide foreign claims before the revolution is crushed. We intend to enforce our rights.” Diplomatic representatives of Germany and Great Britain left Caracas without awaiting the Venezuelan reply. . ms WASHINGTON, Dec. 1o— Secretary Hay today brought before President Roosevelt and his Cabinet the latest phases of the Venezuela situation, which is expected to become even more acute. Minister Bowen cabled the State Department that the German and British Governments requested him to take charge of their affairs and.extend protection to their subjects The request will be granted. The State Department has full knowledge of the intentions of the British and German governments, having been sounded in advance. Lonpon, Dec. 1o—In the House of Commons, under the head of foreign affairs, Secretary Cranborne said that the Government had no official information of the seizure of Brit. ish subjects in Venezuela or the seizure of Venezuelan w ar ships by the British*German fleet.
