OOD EVENING, CITY TRUSTEES AND CITY
MARSHAL: Grass Valley has a great sensation in
the way of the cruel murder of Joseph Grifiths, and
the Grand Jury is wrestling with the matter. It never rains
but it pours—misfortunes never come singly. And now
there is a sensation for Nevada City to indulge in. It is
reported on the street that you, the City Trustees and City
Marshal, have been cited to appear before the Grand Jury
at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning for some cause not known
as yet, as it seems the secret has not been let out. Your
friends will await the coming morrow with eager suspense.

More Railroad Talk.
HERE IS CONSIDERABLE TALK about a new railroad being constructed between Nevada-and Yuba
counties, and that preparations are under headway at
San Francisco for the project. The whole matter was pub
lished in the TRANSCRIPT about two weeks ago, and nothing
in addition to that has transpired since that time. As stated
by the TRANSCRIPT the surveys are being gone over in San
Francisco and no field work is contemplated this winter.
The surveyors accomplished all that was expected a short
time prior to the publication of the TRANSCRIPT’s article.
As emphatically stated at that time, the information having
been obtained from reliable authority, the new railroad will
be built.

A Valuable Gift.
USTOMAH LODGE, I. O. O. F., at their meeting last
evening took action on their proposed offer to donate
to the public free library the large and vatuable collection of books in their library, and the Odd Fellows unanimously voted the trustees authority to turn them over to
the new institution as soon as it is established. As was
announced in the TRANSCRIPT several days ago, the only
proviso made by the donor is that im case the public
library should ever go out of existence the ownership of the
books should Tevert back to Oustomah Lodge. There is not
much likelihood, however, that the proposed free library will
ever be allowed to collapse, after it is once well established
and the people realize more forcibly the great advantages
and benefits of such.a desirable institution. AlreadPBfteen
hundred dollars have been assured by the public for the furtherment of the enterprise, and it is likely that the amount
will be increased a considerable sum before the final contribution is made. The generous donations of cash by the pub
lic and the valuable collection of books given will give
Nevada City a public library that they can be proud of.
The library given by the Odd Fellows consists of 2500 vol.
umes and is valued at $2000. Itis indeed a magnifient addition to the proposed new library, and the generosity of Oustomah Lodge and other contributors is greatly appreciated
by the general public. :

After washing the clothes of the deDr. E. Jamieson of Grass Valley
made a minute examination. yesterCoroner
Daniela had previously boiled the
frame fh a strong cleansing solution,
which left every part of the bones perfectly clean: and free for inspection.
The examination proved that the bullet entered almost on a line with the
navel, ranging somewhat to the right
of the spinal column. The bullet
which. caused the death of Griffiths
It was evidently fired by an undersized person or one in a kneeling position, or else while Griffiths was sitting or lying upon the ground, The
bullet taken from the vertebra was of
44 calibre. The clothing worn by
Griffiths at the time of bis death are
pow in the hands of Coroner Daniels,
and will be thoroughly cleaned, when
it is thought that the exact entrance
of the bullet may be defined. °
According to the opinion of medical
men it would bave been a physical
impossibility for one man to have carried the body of Griffith to the shaft
and thrown it in, as Griffiths weighed
about 180 pounds. :
Word was received yesterday of the
arrest in San Francisco of Mrs. Allen
and “Dickie” Bennetts, and Sheriff
Getchell left this morping to get the
prisoners and bring them back, when
they will be brought before the Grand
Jury to explain what they krow concerning the murder, and the disposttion of the body. It is rumored that
a charge of adultery ‘will be preferred
against the pair, as they are both married. Bennetts wife left him some
time ago for another man.
The San Franeisco Post of yesterday says: Detective Koss Whittaker
and Officer James McGowan arrested
Richard Bennett and locked him up 1n
the City Prison tanks. The woman bas
been stopping at a roadside house in
Oakland for several daye with Bennett. The authorities of Grass Valley
learning that Bennett had a sum of
money coming to bim at the Risdon
had left for Grass Valley. Later ivformation conveyed the news that she
was placed under arrest by the authorities at San Jose. Sheriff Getchell
ie in San Francisco and he will proceed to San Jose and bring her to this
city.
‘Tbe Grand Jury convened at ten
ocieck this morning and a few witnessess were before that body and examined in reference to the Griffiths
case. There is but little talk on the
street asto the doings of the Grand
Jury. It is generally understood that
the circumstances attending the death
of Griffiths are being investigated, and
the public does not appear to be
interested as to other matters.
