Estee takes upon himself all the responsibility for the action begun “in his behalf in the State Supreme Court to contest the election of James H.Budd as ‘iqvernor. Estee says that he can no longer allow the Democratie press and politiciaus to state that he disapptves of the attempt ,of his party leaders to investigate the alleged election frauds in San Francisco. The following card from Estee is published : “To THE PEOPLE OF CALIFORNIA :—Some days ago, in a letter addressed to the Republican State Central Committee, I stated that I would make no contest to secure the office uf Governor, either in my own name or by ray authority or direction. The question whether there has been’an honest vote and a fair count is for the people to decide. This is my position, still, as far as it.relates to the office of Governor. I would not accept that office if the title rested’ upon mere technical grounds, but I cannot permit ‘my friends or my party to stand in a false position or to do for me what I am not willing to indorse. It is due to Mr. Cornwall, who recently commenced an ac i n in the Supreme Court to test the validity of the election in certain precincts in San Francisco, it is due to the Republican party, and it is due to the whole people of the State, regardless of party, for me to explain why these proceedings have been taken. They have been brought to uncover alleged: frauds in the recent election in San Francisco, and not for the purpose of changing the result by technical means. I am willing to assume’ all responsibility of this litigation, and I state now that it is right. I say further, there is nothing worth preserving in our Government, there is nothing worth preserving in the Republican party—if we cannot have an honest vote and a fair count at our elections. The petition tiled asks fora recount in certain precincts of San Francisco, which show the earmarks of fraud. No good citizen can object to this. No lawabiding Republican can oppose it. . This proceeding is not an attack upon any party, It is to test the purity of our elections. It would seem that in San Francisco customs has made election frauds pvupular, and opposition to them is calied an attack upon the elective franchise. M. M. Ester.” ' a. fs Toys, Games, Guns, Footballs, etc., etc., at Carr Bros, ae tf EER eS POOR: Election Postponed. The election for Colonel of the Second Regiment, Uniform Rank Knights of Pythias, which was to have taken place at Sacramento yesterday, has been postponed till next Wednesday. »C> F.
