om. oe Se a = THE TRANSCRIPT. Established Sept. 6. 1860, by Nat. P. Brown & Co. NEVADA CITY, NEVADA CO. CALIFORNIA BROWN & CALKINS, . Proprietors THURSDAY..... DEC. 16, 1897. bn nw NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. A good deal of distress has been feli in the minds of Democratic editord for the past few days over the fact that the estimates of the Treasury Department sent to Congress at the opening of the session indicate anapparent deficit o 21,647,885 during the fiscal year which ends June 30, 1899. It is proper to say, with reference to this estimate, that a recently enacted law requires the War Department to put into its estimate for the expenditures of the coming year all estimates mude by subordinate officers of needed expenditures upon the river and harbor works where they are employed. The result of this is that the estimates for river and harbor improvements alone amounted to $65,400,409.C0, which, of course, is from forty to fifty million dollars more than will be appropriated for that purpose. Notwitbstanding the fact that these figures were excessive, the Treasury Department was compelled under the law to include them in its so-called estimates, knowing full well they were absolutely excessive, and that the appropriaticn for this work would fall probably $50,000,000 below the figures named. These circumstances account for the fact that the official figures estimate an apparent ‘deficit of $21,000,000, when, in fact, it is expected that there will be a surplus of at least that amount in the year in question. Something to Kick For. The Reno Gazette says: We know of merchants in this town and Carson, in fact nearly every town in the State, who preach up patronize home merchants, keep your money circulating at home, who send “below” for their letterheads, billheads, envelopes and, in fact, all the stationery required to conduct their business, and yet these game “business men” are the loudest in denouncing any one who sends away for anything they (the merchants) deal in. Nevadans for Nevada sounds poetical, but the same loyalty should extend to all alike. The Gazette will acknowledge that it feels 'a little sore over the proposition of “home industry.” We had a canvasser out the other day canvassing for subscriptions to the Gazette and he met many who said: “We take more papers than we can read. Why, we get the Examiner, Chronicle or Call and do not want the Gazette.” A Miner’s Appeal. Last evening’s Virginia City Chronicle says: William Pellew, a former Comstock miuer, was recently hurt 80 badly in a mine at Jackson, Amador couuty, California, that his eyesight was destroyed. He appeais to his fellow miners on the Comstock in his misfortune. A list of names, with amounts paid, is at Prater’s grocery store, and others who wish to help can leave their mite at this place, and the sums gathered will be sent to the injured man. it Is No Lottery To buy Christmas giits if you go to the right store. The News of Last Evening’s Truckee Republican Boiled Down. The last few days of storm has stirred the icemen around here to great activity. P. Henry has had a crew of men at work on his upper pond scraping off the snow. The ice is not thick enough to bear up horses safely and it takes a great many men to do the work by hand. The Tahoe Ice company have some ice on their pond, put they have not. determined whether to try to save it or not. The Donner Ice Company sluiced their pond a few days ago and of course now have not enough,'to do anything with. James McDonald of Boca sent up for twenty-five men yesterday to put to work on the ponds at Prosser to keep the snow off. ___The. festive. goath= is enjoying life hagely since the new fall of snow. His merry shout and happy laughter is heard on all sides. C. R. McLellan sent down for ten men to go to work on the Cold Stream ponds yesterday. The ice there is about aine inches in thickness. Elmer Smith, who bas been working up at the Cold Stream Ice Company’s works, was brought home Sunday sufftism. Superintendent Dysart at Iceland has seven or eight inches on the mountain ponds, but not so much on the others, and is trying to keep them clear of snow.
