number have lived to be very old men.
Those who died between 60 and 70

came Gluck, Guonod, Handel, Liszt,

When All Signs Fail.
Old time residents have heretofore
contended that two dry years in succession were impossible to California,
but now they are beginning to wonder
if it is possible for all signs to fail in
dry weather. Even Giffin’s picnic
charm has proven impotent this win-d
ter, and be refuses to be interviewed
on the subject.

Proceedings Are Now Heard by a United
“States Offfeia).
For several months no cases of insolvency have appeared.on the book at
the County Olerk’s office. The cause
is to be found in a United States law
which went into effect this year,
The fact is not generally known that
insolvency cases have been taken out
of the Superior Courts entirely, and
that all the proceedings must now be
had before a United States Referee in.
Bankruptcy. But this has been the
ust. As yet but one petition has been
filed in this county under the new order of things, and that was by a Chinaue os :
The office of Referee isa good one
"Spotting the Miners.
__ Among last evening’s arrivals at this
city were W. T. Phipps, a lawyer who is
president and manager of the AntiDebris Association, D. P. Durst of
Wheatland, editor of the Wheatland
Four-Oorners, E.J. White, a Supervisorelect of Sutter county, and M. E. Ramsey,a spy. It costs the valley people
quite a pretty sum to keep these men
going, and the people down there are
beginning to wonder if there is any
hecessity for continuing the expense.
. Ofcourse Manager Phipps and his
Spies insist that. it is very important

_ ‘The Teachers’ Institute.
The semi-annual examination of ap.
plicants for certificates to teach in the
public schools of the county, which is
when there are large estates, but in
small insolvency cases he gets only his
fee, which amounts to $10. -He is entitled to commissions, and to pay for’
clerical work in taking depositions,
however, and in the case of a contested
estate ‘of $10,000 the. receipts of the
Referee would amount to @bout $500.
Under the new law the referee makes
his report to one of the Superior Judges, who -signs the ordér of ‘adjudication. The creditors are entitled to a
representative in the proceedings, who
is called the Turstee in Bankruptcy.
The object of the new method of procedure fs to protect the interests of
creditors living in other States. Under the revised order of thitigs it
would bg possible for a persén to go
through inselvenvy without attracting
ity, because the petition can be filed in
any county of the State he chooses.

PERSONAL POINTERS,
Specialties For'the Holidays.
For many years the store of Wm. G.
Richards, the Broad street grocer, has
deservedly ranked as one of the busiest and most popular business houses
in the county. Its patronage is built
up on merit and there is consequently
a steady growth in its magnitude. Mr.
Richardg’ business plan is to sell the
very finest class of goods at uniformly
low prices—to serve the public “on
honor” and thus retain their confidence
and trade.
At present the store is making a
specialty of choice holiday goods, such
as mince meat, orange, citron and
lemon peel, canned delicacies of all
kinds, etc. ;
