Nevapa City DaiLty TRANSCRIPT BROWN & CALEING, PrRorrrerors, ‘ound Every Evening, Sundays tExcepted, at Nevada City. TERMS OF SUBSCRIPTION . * $6 Per Year . By Carrier, “ ‘s Delivered to any part of the city. 12 1-2c Per Week TUESDAY December 17, 1901 a ee errr ee OOD EVENING, CITY MARSHAL SHEARER. G As street superintendent you are doing first-class work in having the roads around the business portion of the town repaired and put in good shape. The citizens,as well as ihe traveling public, appreciate the greatly desired improvement and hope that you are authorized by our progressive Board of City Trustees to continue the good work until every street within the city limits is put in fit condition to ride or drive over. Let the good work goon, as fast as the weather will permit, and all the people will say: “Well done, thou good and faithful servants.” ae eaeaee ee 4h tt ‘Leave It Stand. REE TRADE PAPERS are claiming with much glee r that our exports are declining, especially our exports of manufacturers. They do not print the whole truth about the matter. They do not explain that prices have declined in many commodities and that the quantity of exports continue to increase though a single month may show a slight decline in total values. But if our total exports should show a small falling off it by no means indicates a decline in manufacturing or any other industrial activity. In fact, the contrary is known to be the case. Our home market is consuming more and more of our productions, the condition being that sales are only limited by means of transportations. The railroads are simply unable to carry all the freight offered. Car works are taxed to their utmost capacity and cannot fill their orders except after months of delay. ‘The Grain Committee of the New York Produce Exchange have called the attention of tne trafic managers of the New York-Buffalo railroads to the lack of enough grain elevators to store large amounts of grain and.to the unequal dock facilities. Every railroad in the country is pressing the car and locomotive builders for new equipment, the New Haven road having just given an order for thirty new loccmotives and 1100 freight ears, the largest order ever given by that company at one time. Weare not worrying about foreign markets when we cannot supply home trade. Holiday orders are already being filled as fast as possible, so fearful are merchants that they will not get their goods in time for the Christmas.shopping. Never beforein our history have our factories been so busy as to-day. Never before were we making so much and selling so much and buyinug so much, The bank clearings of every provincial city (and these are not affected by stock transactions as is the New York Clearing House) show a greater volume of business than was ever before recorded. What matters the loss of a few millions abroad when we are gaining billions at home? There is no cloud on the industrial sky and no menace to business save the rantings of Free-Traders: for a revision of the Tariff, which is working perfectly in every section of the country and to the advantage of every industry. The cry for reciprocity, which is not reciprocity, but Free-Trade, will hardly avail under present conditions, “Let well enough alone” should be the watchwerd throughout the land. To tinker with the Tariff now or let down the bars by treaties that take but do not give would be the veriest folly and reverse the present unparalled conditions which are taking us on to greater and greater industrial activity and national and individual prosperity. a — “MAHER — & CO. and willing hands are at plain figures, so it is easy for you to select. who do not forget you, we have: Beautiful Linen Handkerchiefs, 10c, 15¢,.25¢, 50¢, 75¢; For the Dear Little Children First is our Doll Booth. A short time ago a young man made bis appearance in this city, and was looking for employment, claiming to be a barber. George Dunster, who was suffering with rheumatism, took compassion on the fellow, and gave him employment in his shop. White specks on the finger nails are usually caused by the misuse of the cuticle knife. Sometimes—very rarely--the white spots are caused by an interception under the naile of the particles of juiee which nourish them. The surface of the nail should vever come in contact with a sharp blade. Many manicures impress the nail down around the eselvedge with a caticle knife, with the reeult that the delicate surface is wcunded. A simple remedy is made of equal parts of pitch and myrrh melted and applied to the nails at night. It will sometimes cure the spots. eee Five hundred tf Ringe! Rings! Ringe ! to choose f:om st O, J. Two or three earthquake shocks, l.sting several seconds, were felt at Stockton, Saturday at 8:14 o’clock, Saturday morning, and inthe upper stories of buildings the vibration was very pronouneed, causing gas chandeliers to swing. This naturally put people of that place to talking about former earthquakes and Victor Heck told the following story:~*'In ’68 I was harnessing a team of horses and suddenly I saw both of the annimals throw their front legs out and brace themselves and several seconds later the shock came. There was considerable water at the time in Miner channel, back of the barn, and it was thrown into sp ashing waves. The mostcurious cireumstance to me, however, was the fact that the horses knew the earthquake was coming several seconds before the ground began to shake.” Mrs. James H. Budd, Stockton’s lady astronomer, makes a novel sug‘gestion inconnection with the earthquake which occurred this morning. All sorts of. theories have been advanced to account for such disturbances, but the scientists are still unable to determine the cause definitely The most generally accepted theory among is that the quakes are caused ty shrinkage of the earth’s crust from cooling. Another theory is that they are caused by some change, displacement or disturbance in the molten interior of the earth. Such a displacement or disturbance might possibly be caused 'by the attraction of other planets, acting upon the earth. At the present time three of the planets having the greatest influence on the earth’s orbit are now In conjanction— Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Venus, though not in conjunction with them, is in the same quarter of the sky. Mars and Venus are the nearest of the earth’s plantetary companions, and Jupiter and Satarn are the largest of all the planets. With these four massed in the same quarter of the sky, three of them in conjunction, their attractive force is about as great as the earth is ever subjected to. “T thought of that Saturday when I felt the earthqnake,” said Mrs. Budd. “Tt struck me jhat it might have been caused by the attraction of the plane's, but of course it is only an idea.” I Was Loaded. A young man named Charles Bishop was yesterday carelessly handling a a muzzile-loading shotgun at Iowa Hill when it was accidentally ‘ischarged. His twin brother and a son of F, H.
