The distribution of activity, it is true, is yet somewhat uneven, cannot appreciate the full. extent and vital consequences of that bitter conflict which waged for years between the valley and mountain interests until he sees actual evidence in devestating results, ~The sentiment of the disinterested was, years ago, largely behind the anti-debris élement, because of a widely prevalent and carefully nufsed conviction that it was battling for hearth and home. It‘seems just to have dawned on the public mind that, with victory for the valley people, the blight of starvation descended upon and withered towns, villages and districts whose whole dependence was the life of the hydraulic industry, and that the issué was of the highest moment to them and their people. They were driven from home and fireside and compelled to restore their broken fortunes elsewhere. Their hardships were great, but let us hope their reward will be greater. “These reflections are impressed upon the visitor who makes a tour of Nevada county, The wreck'of a great industry is in places the first and almost the only thing he sees. But elsewhere he finds substantial _ evidences of grewth, wealth and happiness, and it is these it is the purpose of this letter in part to review. There are signs of reviying life in hydraulic mining, ‘and it is probable that a few years will witness an approximation to its former dimensidns, Quartz mining has in the Nevada and Grass Valley districts experienced a very notable revival, and all parts ef the county partake more or less in its benefits, The salient feature of recent developments about Nevada City is the general movement in the direction of deep mining. Tt has been demonstrated beyond the possi~ bility of chance that deep sinking is attended by prefitable results; and steady downward progress is now being made in several of the important properties of the district. It appears to have been the rule in the district that, when development reached a point in the neighborhood of 1000 feet, barren rock would be encountered, and, in many places, the impression was prevalent that the ledge would pinch out; and it remained for the Providence Mining Company, through its superintendent, Col, Carl Davis, to disclose the real value of the deep quartz, The Mountaineer mine continued sinking its shaft after poor rock was struck, and found pay ore; but the result of its operations dees not appear to have been ( To be continued.)
