F JOSEPH GRIFFITHS WAS MURDERED, WHO committed the deed? The Grand Jury, which has been ter’s testimony inevery particular. This ‘is: the testimony in a nutshell, and all who heard ihe testimony, believe the statements made by. Mrs. Keleher and John Hocking, and farther believe that Mrs. Bigelow, and William Benfield and his wife testified falsely. The'réader can'seé at a glance that this is one of the very. hardest cases to solve, and: therefore the two juries could not have done any different from what they have. in session for the past eight days, most of the time having been occupied in investigating the cause of the death of Joseph Griffiths, who disappeared from Grass Valley on the 15th day of last April, and whose body was recovered on the 7th day of December, from a shaft on Massachusetts Hill, by the evidence brought before that body believe that’ Joseph Griffiths was murdered. Acting upon the theory that if the recovery of his body was on ‘the promise of John Hocking, a prominent business man of Grass Valley, to pay William Benfield the sum of $200, then a larger reward if offered, might bring to the surface the murderer or murderers of Joseph Griffiths, and therefore they have asked Governor Gage, on behalf of the State, and the Board of Supervisors of Nevada County, to offera reward. It should be one large enough, so that it would attract the attention of the best detectives. The facts of the case are briefly as follows, being a synopsis of the testimony taken at the Coro-} ner’s inquest: Mrs. Jennie Keleher called on John Hocking, who is an undertaker and dealer in furniture, carpets, etc,, at Grass Valley, to look at a carpet. This was in November last, or about-five weeks before the recovery of the body. During the conversation the disappearance of Griffiths was brought up, and Mrs. Keleher said that Mrs. William Benfield had told her if she (Mrs. Benfield) was a man, she could find the remains of Joseph Griffiths in two hours. Mr. Hocking had great faith in that slight clue, and requested Mrs. Keleher to have another interview with Mrs. Benfield, and if possible have the two women call at his store and talk the matter over. Mrs. Keleher again called at Hocking’s store, this time in company.with Mrs. Benfield. The information was corroborated by Mrs. Benfield in the presence of . Mrs. Keleher. After this visit Mrs. Benfield did not call at the store of Mr. Hocking for several days When she again came in she said that she thought she had talked too much on the previous occasion, and that her husband (Benfield) thought that it was not the place of a woman to attend to such matters. A few days later Benfield went to the store of Mr. Hocking, when the latter excused himself for a moment and went to the telephone and called up Marshal Deeble, who took up a position over the store where he could look down on Hocking and Benfield and hear their conversation. Benfield was reluctant and said his wife had told Hocking more than she had him. At this meeting the question of the money to be paid for the infermation was discussed. But it was not until later that the matter was settled. Marshal Deeble was also in hearing on this occasion. Benfield told of the exact way of going to the shaft, and Hocking wrote out the direction in Benfield’s presence, avd then Benfield said, ‘“‘go as I tell you, and you will find what Benfield said this unreservedly, and was posiHocking then said, “I do Benit was partially covered with tin cans and rubbish. On the day that Hocking and others went out to recover the remains, in passing Benfield’s house they stopped and had a further conversation with him. He said they would find what he wanted in the shaft he had indicated just as he had told him. And you want.” tive in regard to his statement. not want to goon a wild goose chase in this matter.” field said it. was in that shaft, and that it proved true in every particular. Benfield and his wife were to receive $100, Mrs Bigelow $100,and Mrs. Keleher was to receive $50 for giving the first information. “ On the back of the note of $200, which Hocking gave Benfield was written, The note was to be good if the body of Griffiths was recovered from the shaft in Allen’s yard, as designated by Benfield. The first inkling of the whereabouts of Griffith’s body was given by Mrs. Bigelow, while under the influence of ~ liquor. William Benfield and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Chas, Allen, Durgie Toolie and his squaw, and Mrs. Bigelow all denied any knowledge of the disappearance of Joseph Griffiths. The two former flatly contradicted all of the testimony given by Mr. Hocking. Marshal Dan Deeble overheard the conversaGoing and Coming.
