Miss Jessie Hathaway is dangerously ill atthe homeof her mother on Aristocracy Hill. ‘ James Vance of San Francisco and W. H. Ryer of Denver are here on mining business, Miss Ethel Mulloy is expected home Thursday from Mills College to spend the holidays. Mrs. Trevaskis, who has been visiting friends in this city, returned to San Franciscé today. Miss May Buffington is expected home tomorrow evening from Berkeley to spend the holidays. Hon. Sidney Smith, one of the very best mining experts on the coast, is expected here tomorrow. , Miss Irene Jepson returned home Saturday night from the San Jose Normal school to spend the holidays. Supervisor Henry Meyer of Sierra county wasin town last night on his way home from San Francisco. Mrs. A. M. Gray arrived here Saturday evening from San Jose to join her Hill. Miss Josie Helwig, daughter of J. H. Helwig:of North Bioamfield, has returned from San Jose to spend the holidays. Miss Addie Stenger arrived home Saturday night from Newcastle, Placer county, where she has been teaching school. _ Mr.and Mrs. Harvey of Gold Flat are both seriously ill. Miss Henwood and Miss Anna Henwood of Grass Valley visited with Mrs. Lammon over Sunday and attended Prof. Michell’s social Saturday ‘evening. Hon. Thos. Mein, accompanied by his son, Willie,will leave for Mexico tomorrow. Next week Mrs. Mein and her son, Robert, contemplate leaving for Honolulu. Mr. and Mrs. Nat. P. Brown returned from San Francisco Saturday evening. Mr. Brown represented Nevada county on beard the steamer Bay City, at the time of the breakage of the walking beam. ; Misses Laura and Frances Power arrived home Saturday evening to spend the holidays. Miss Power is attending the State University, at Berkeley, while Frankie has been at the State Normal School at San Jose. Dr. W. H. Wentworth and wife of Sacramento and Miss Gnssie Wentworth, a teacher in the public schools of San Francisco, arrived here Saturday evening, being summoned by the critical condition of their father.Julian Barnes of Chicago, of the Sierra Gold Mining Company which suspended operations a few months ago at its mine near Downieville, is here. Mr. Wentworth was a man of intelligence and integrity and was highly regarded in the community where he had lived so long. Finis BE. Baker, who came to Nevada county in the early fifties and was for many years a miner at Blue Tent, died suddenly shortly before ten o’clock this morning at the Spanish mine where he has been employed as watchman. While preparing his breakfast he was seized with acute pains in the back and became helpless. Dr. Hunt was sent for but the old man was dead before the physician could get there. The cause of death was aneurism ,or the bursting of a blood vessel. On several occasions previously he bad suffered from milder attacks of the same char-. acter. He was a man of spotless character and a good citizen. He was born in Illinois sixty years ago, and was a widower. One: daughtér and several step-daugbters survive him. They are Mrs. O. D. Campbell, Mrs. Ed. Hager, Mrs. F. P. Williams, Mrs. Merrow and Mrs. Henry Fuller, all of this township. Lester Meredith, son of Mr. and year and 23 days. this afternoon. "BUS LINE.
