HE JOINT MEETING held last evening by the Boards of Education of Nevada City and Grass Valley for the purpose of discussing “high school,’ was well attended by representatives of both bodies and much benefit was derived from a joint discussion of the matter. All were unanimous in the opinion that a Union High School is just what is required tv give better facilities for the advanced pupils of our district and city schools and to qualify them for admission into the Universities, if a higher and classical education is desired, and also give all our graduates from the grammar course the benefit of a complete and thorough business education. ice The cost of maintaining the high school at this city, is $3000 per year, and the one at Grass Valley costs the same This is considered too great an expense for one school, as it prevents any important improvements in any of the other grades and the expenditure of any money for keeping the school building. Although the present high school system)” of our city is further advanced and in better shape:than it ever was, it it not yet up to.the standard desired, nor can it be made so unless it is established independently from the other grades. It would be impossible for Nevada City or Grass Valley school districts to do this independently, but with a union of forces a County High School could be conducted at the comparatively low cost to each individual taxpayer of 15 cents on the $100 of taxable property. Forty four of the fifty-seven counties in this State have such schools and have realized great benefit therefrom and there is no good reason why Nevada County should be behind the rest of the State in educational facilities. . The cost of maintaining a union or County High School . : Ae pipet would be about $80co per year, or as stated above, would C amount to 15 cents on each $100 of taxable property. This, ofcourse, excludes Meadow Lake township, which has already a first-class high school of their own which answers all If the proposed constitutional amendment is State election, all county high schools will receive State aid, and in this case the proposed tax of 15 requirements. carried at the next ba] cents on each $100 would be greatly reduced. The proposition was well discussed last eveuing and a committee of five, consisting of W. F. Englebright, W. J. Michell, Geo. L. Jones, Dr. C. L. Muller and C. E. Mulloy was appointed to call a meeting of the school trustees of the various districts in the county to further consider the propoIt was decided to hold this meeting at Grass Valley on Saturday, January 11th. Geo L. Jones, Thos. Ingram lebright were appointed a committee to wait _on Mr. Fairchild and others in relation to a donation of a site and to discuss rates of fare, should it be decided by the taxpayers of the county to establish a schovul between this sition. and W.
