When one sees a case full of well-chosen, well thumbed books, one knows that he is in the house of a man who thinks and who has real culture. In order to keep these two hours in the evening sacred to himself and his books at least four nights a week a man " must firmly resist intrusion. If he gives three nights each week to his friends, to seeing company at home or abroad, to the play, to any other amusement, pleasure or duty, be gives as much as he can afford. He must train his friends:to call on these free nights and to let him alone at other times. He must regard his reading as a duty and attend to it as zealously as he attends to his day’s work. Eight hours a week is little enough for any man to spend on books. If a man lives in the world and keeps up any position in society it will be difficult for him to reserve his evenings for study, but by Geo exercising resolution he.can do it. It is ‘a matter really of t self preservation in the struggle of existence.
