hours a day; the average woman a great deal less.
Of the remaining fourteen, eight may be given to
sleep and two to dressing and eating. Allow one hour for
traveling to and from work and one as a factor of safety and
there remain two hours to account for. They fall, for most
men, between 8 and 10 o’clock in the evening. Those two
hours may make or mar the man.

knows that he is in the house of a man who thinks and who
has real culture.
In order to keep these two hours in the evening sacred

" must firmly resist intrusion. If he gives three nights each
week to his friends, to seeing company at home or abroad, to
the play, to any other amusement, pleasure or duty, be gives

on these free nights and to let him alone at other times. He
must regard his reading as a duty and attend to it as zealously as he attends to his day’s work. Eight hours a week
is little enough for any man to spend on books. If a man
lives in the world and keeps up any position in society it will
be difficult for him to reserve his evenings for study, but by
