VOL. LXVI==NO. 10191 NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA, SATURDAY EVENING, DECEMBER 2, 1893. :
Established Sept. 6, 1860, by N. P. Brown & Co.
HOW EDITOR GREEN
Would Solve the Slickens Question
—A, New Idea.
The problem for ‘the Valley and the
Mines has been what to do with the slickens. ‘There are thousands of acres of slickens in the Yuba and the Bear rivers between
the foot-hills and their junctions with the
Feather, that will, unless some means shall
be adopted to prevent it, move on down into
the lower river and the bay. The American
basin has often been suggested as a settling
basin, but how-get there? The Sacramento
Bee of Nov. 24th, in giving an acceant of
the trip of the Caminetti party has the following: —
After the return to Marysville, the Yuba
cut-off and the DeGuerre Point dam project
were freely discussed by the travelers. Will
8. Green, editor of the Colusa Sun, expressed the opinion that without doubt the
cut in the Yuba river will lower the high. water plane on the city’s levees, and, for the
time, deliver it from the dangers of overflow.
“It is understood,” said Mr. Green, ‘‘that
the United States. Surveyers'are now at
work surveying the Yuba river, or, rather,
the territory, which’ is about three miles
wide, between the levees, with a view of
stopping in some way the debris now between the levees from being washed gown
into the lower rivers, It is a fact that,
since, the partial stoppage of hydraulic mining, the surface of this great body of some
30 square miles has been lowered, and, of
course, it has gone into the lower rivers or
' the bay. It will all finally wash down unless in some way prevented.”
“Let me suggest a plan,” continued the
editor. ‘The plane of slickens is’ some
eight or ten feet above the high land on
either side of the river. Now, if a levee
should be thrown up to the necessary
highth, sume 500 or 600 feet from the levee
on the south side of the river, and parallel
to it, there would be a channel, the bottom
of which would be eight or ten feet below
the present channel, and the river would be
turned into it. As there would be but one
levee te build, it'would be cheap. Marysville would be, in that case, absolutely safe,
for it would have the three-iniles-wide levee,
that. has been built up by the slickens, between it and the river.”’
CREATING A NEW OASIS,
“The present river bed,” said he, ‘or the
miles of territory now given to the river,
would be the highest land in the valley.
The willows would grow upon it, and the
leaves and root-rotting would soon giye it a
vegetable element, so that it weuld be fertile again. If this channel of ‘the river fills
up, move it again, and so keep on building
up the country. The land is not rich on
the south side, and the right of way would
not cost a very large figure, ;
“If the Yuba river could be carried
alongside its present channel, and alongside
south side of the Feather river, in this way
until it could be debouched into the American basin, taking Bear river with ‘it, the
slicken question might be solved. A right
of way a mile wide would permit of several
removals of the river to the south, and
would postpone any danger fer year’s to
come,
‘‘Neither would it be necessary to occupy .
the whele of the American basin for a settling basin, Several thousand acrés could
be purchased and a levee built around it,
“~and the water, after being settled, could
flow back over a weir into the Sacramento
river.”

A BIG MINE
In Placer County Worth Upwards of
a Million Dollars.
It will be a happy surprise to many people
in Placer county to know that within another year Eastern Placer will have one of
the largest quartz mines in California. This
mine is the Sterrett mine located about 12
miles south of Cisco. Although this ledge
has long been known to exist, it is only
within the past two years that it has been
systematically developed, The ledge is
simply a monster in dimensions, At the
surface there are two ledges separated by a
dike and here each ledge has a width of 60
feet.’ 600 feetin from the surface the two
ledges come together again in one formation
and here the ledge is 70 feet in width. Tunnels have been run into the ledge from both
the American river and: Sailor Canyon sides,
1000 feet each, and besides other prospecting has been done to satisfy the owners
that the mine is a bonanza, At
present men are at work opening up the
mine and putting up buildings and getting
out timbers for the large stamp mill and
chlorination works te be put up in the spring.
The huge ledge prospeets from one wall
to the other both at the surface and all the
way to the end of the 1000-foot tunnel. Although generally of a low grade ore, yielding in free gold $2 50a ton, yet it abounds
in sulphurets. In some places the ledge is
so mineralized that sulphurets can be takon
out by the solid block of three and four feet,
In: some places the ore has gone over $90
aton, altheugh it is generally of a low
grade. Owing to the immense size of the
ledge and its bearing free gold throughout,
even the low grade ore can be worked at
great profit. Besides with. chlorination
works the sulphurets will pay well, The
company owning the mine is composed of
San Francisco and New York capitalists.
Geo, 8. Montgomery, the well-known San
Francisco millionaire, is at the head of the
company and preparations are being made té
put up an extensive stamp mill and chlorination works as soon as possible in the spring.
A sixty-stamp mill will be put up at first.
The Colfax Sentinel says five years ago this
mine could have been bought for $150,000,
this year the company was offered $1,(000,000 for it by Colorado capitalists. The
company owns about 1100 feet of the ledge
and have enough paying ore in sight to keep
the sixty-stamp mill going for years, The
development of the mine has been kept
quiet, but the preparations have been going
on steadily just the same.

For stylish evening costumes the silks of
the present season have never been surpassed in fanciful variety, Amiong other
novelties the broche moires are particularly
attractive. A rich brocade for reception
gowns is galled ‘“‘damas camaieu.” This
material has repped ground in some solid
color with a design in satin of the same
color shot with white. The painted bengalines are evening silks with light grounds,
having printed Pompadour bouquets which
look as if painted in water colors. These
jtems, as well as many others equally attractive, are to be found in the McDowell
Fashion Magazines just received, The lat~
est nu of these artistic publications
maintain still their hgh standard of excellence, which makes them of inestimable
value to all devotees of fashion, and easily
accounts for the wide-spread admiration
they securad at the World's Fair. A special hew inducement has been introduced in
them in the shape of pattern coupons, by
which one can secure many novelties at
moderate prices. ‘‘La Mode de Paris” and
‘Album of Fashion” only cost $3 59 a year
each, or 36 cents a copy. ‘The French
Dressmaker” is $3 per annum, or 30 cents a
sopy, while ‘La Mede,'’ the home fashion
magazine above all, comes at the very moderate price of $1 50 year, or 15 cents a
copy. If you are unable to procure any of
these publications at your newsdealer, apply

A Gravel Mine on Which Work Has
Been Resumed. :
Work has been resumed on the Keystone
gravel mine after a suspension of operations
for several months. This mine is situated
on the ranch of Thomas Hughes, on the
old Grass Valley road, and is being worked
by a Grass Valley company. They are
driving a tunnel into the ridge from the
Deer-creek side and expect to strike the
channel before long, as it is known about
where it runs, a shaft having been’ sunk on
it some years age, but owing to the water
encountered it was found impracticable’ to
work the mine that way.’ The gravel was
quite rich. It is supposed that this channel
is the same one that extends down the ridge
to Alta Hill, near Grass Valley, where it
was worked in years past and preved to be
very rich,
The development of the Keystone is
awaited with much interest by owners of
land along the ridge on each side of this
mine, as it will determine the general course
and extent of the channel, as well as its
richness. It is believed that the channel
runs through the McKeon and Sutton
ranches; in fact there is little doubt as to
that, but whether the deposit is large
enough to warrant working it by the drifting process is a question. As the land is
valuable for agricultural purposes it is not
probable that it will ever be hydraulicked
unless found to be immensely rich. If the
channel is deep and rich it can be drifted to
advantage, without damage-to the surface.
