LXVI--NO. 10807 SAAS ENE LILO ER DE ELIE OEE NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA, FRIDAY EVENIN G, DECEMBER 20, 189s. 4 Established Sept.6, 1860, by N. P. Brown& Co, AS TO LODGE BENEFITS. “A Decision ofGreat Interest to Lodges of Odd Fellows. A decision of interest to all members of the Order of Odd Fellows was rendered by the Supreme Oburt in the suit of Max Lavy against Magnolia Lodge, No. 29. Levy was expelled from the lodge for contempt. He refused to appear aud show cause Why he should not be deprived of sick benefits, and instead brought a suit for the money which he claimed to be due. At the instance of Levy Superior Judge Seawall issued a writ of mandate directing the lodge to restore Levy to membership. This decision the Supreme Court has now reversed, The Supreme Court held that Levy should have stood trial on the charge of drawing sick benefits improperly. His suit to recover benefits is said to have been in plain violation of valid laws of the lodge which deprived him of the right to recover such benefits in any of the courts of the State, It Was held, moreover, that the lodge had provided a remedy for the grievance complained of and he had not availed himself of that remedy, pleading of such fact would have constituted a perfect defense to any suit in the State courts, ————___« 9@ 6-2 ————__— Ww. Y.°O. D. Mine Telegraph: .The above uimed mine is looking better than ever and there is a great deal of development work being done on the property. The rock is rich and gets richer as depth is attained, There are now ‘80 men.on the pay roll at the mine and the shaft is being put down from the 14 leve ‘and will not cease until it reaches the 16 level. After that it will be kept on going just the same. ——_+ee A Change Made. When the Supreme Uourt, A. O. F. of A., met in October last it was decided to change the name of the Order by dropping the word ‘‘Ancient,” and merely calling it “Foresters of America,” At the same time the numbering was changed to conform with the order in wich the Courts in each State were admitted, the Grass Valley Court being No, 8, and the Nevada Court No. 9, — = me ay GW: 1896,LeaP vear.{896, LAUREL :: PARLOR, NO? 6, N. Singular Diversion of Views by the Great Masters. T IS a singular fact that through“out the entire New Testament there is nothing regarding the personal appearance of Christ, and the early fathers of the church, who doubtless knew ox. something of how not [8 <1 J he looked while on 1) } \ earth, are equally : Sex 7 4 silentabout it. A ——<t yg portrait of him es + has been claimed hag by some. to have come down from apostolic times, and that copies of it were taken and are still extant. That this statement has no foundation in fact would appear to be evident from the ciroumstance thatthe old masters, in their representa tions of the Saviour, follow no recognized model and are as various in such portraltures as wore their conceptions of what the real Christ should be. This divorsity must be apparent to all who have examined such-paintings in the Louvre and other large collections. In Fra F. Lippi's ‘‘Madonna and Child,’’ for instance, an exquisite creation, the face of the infant Saviour, though perfect in con tour, has a look of prevoclons intelligence which seems unnatural in one so young. Carlo Dolce, Murillo and others, though
displaying different types of child lito, are perhaps equally successful in conveying a nearly satisfying ideal-in their representa tions of the child Christ They all, how no regard, to ethnic considera ions in their work, and as a result the face is Lialian, French, Spanish or lem ish, as the case may be, rather than Jew inh, ws it s in paintings of the man Christ ‘there is n ostitl greater diversity noticeable, as would bo naturally expected. The face of Christ in PF. R, Francia’s painting, ‘The Virgin and Two Angols Weeping Over the Dead Body of Christ,’’ is probably the di vinest conception of it ever traced on Gan vas. Though the face is evidently that of the dead, all the emotions of the soul seem to be mirrored upon it. In Borgognone’s “Christ Bearing the Cross,’’ Correggio’s “Kece — Homo,"’ Guido Reni’s ‘Kece Homo,"’ all inarveloys creations, as well as in others perhaps equally meritorious, however different they may be, they at least convey an ideal Christ, which does not shock Christian sensibilities, as does Munkaosy’s representationof the Saviour in his famous painting ‘Christ Before Pilate.” NEtL MACDONALD, Ver, prey hould ‘have been ——-~-—_~-+-0@o+Your Own Fault. I have. been sutfering with the Catarrh ‘for over twenty years, Have had catarrh of the stomach tor over five years, Last year had Gastric Catarrh of the stemach in its worst form, Neuralgia-ofthestomach and bowels from which . suffered constantly aud at times so severely that it seemed I could rot endure it. Medicine failed to give me any relief; my friends all thought I must die. Less than four months ago I put on what ia known as the Magnetio Conservative Gar ments, The piece I used was the piece that covers the chest and luugs, both tront and back, body belt, insoles in my shoes and used the Actina for the catarrh, I consider myself cured of the Catarrh and in less thau two weeks from the time . put on the garments; the neuralgia was al! gone and I have not felt it any since, I have procured garments for at least a dozen-or more in Nevada City and all have reported to me that they are constantly improving ;°.one party in particular who has been suffering from. catarrh and kidney trouble for the last twelve years. The lower part of his limbs swelled badly and he could not stand up more than an hour at atime. Less than three months ago he put on the chest and lung invigorator, body belt and leggings and now he works all day at his trade and his limbs do not swell at all, I need not go before a Notary Public to qualify to the above, as there are hundreds that can testify to the truth of the abbve statement, I am agent for the New York and London Electric Association and anyone wishing a pamphlet or any information regarding any by addressing J.
