Grass Valleys,
Fellowing a custom which was inaugurated in Grass Valley many years ago Donation Day was observed at that place today,
A procession was formed this forenoon and
was quite large considering the weather.
The donations as usual were very liberal,
At least 1,000 children, all carrying donations of one kind or another, formed in
line and marched to one of the school buildings. On the way they were jofned by
business men and other citizens who carried
sacks of flour, hams, baskets of provisions
or other articles, The donations were deposited at the schoolhouse, and an inventory of the same shows that over ‘a ton of
flour, 3,000 pounds of potatoes} a large lot
of hams, bacon,
quantity. of mixed groceries and provisions,
Besides this. there was about
in cash contributions received, Of
bread, besides a great
were given.
$300
this amount John and Edward Coleman,
formerly of Grass Valley, sent $100 each,
and Clinch’& Co. gave $50.
This afternoon the Ladies’ Relief Society
were busy distributing the food donations
among the needy and deserving people. of
their town,
The Tidings says : It @ interesting at this
time to inquire into the origin and history
of Donation Day.
first town in California to inaugurate such a
day. It was instituted in this city thirteen
years ago, upon the suggestion of Mrs, A
H, Hanson [sister of Walter Mead, TRANscrire’s San Francisco correspondent] a lady
Grass Valley was the
‘who now resides in San Francisco, but’ who
was then the mother of a family of children
in Grass Valley. Mrs. Hanson, although an
invalid, was a woman of. bright intellect,
and with a warm heart. She suggested that
each child in the public schools, upon a
specified day, should bring at least one-article to be given to the poor. A stick of wood,
or a potato, each, was mentioned as an appropriate offering, The idea was taken up,
and it was found that with over 1000 generous children in the schools, the sum total
of donations went a long way in relieving
the distress ofthe poor, The spirit of charity
became infectious. As the children continued the practice in a quiet way for two or
three years the tendency to give enlarged,
but many outside the school joined the
ranks of the givers, Gradually the merchants became interested. Instead of single
potatoes, sacks of potatoes were given; instead of single sticks of wood, cords were
donated; instead of single cuts of meat, hams
and legs of mutton and quarters of beet
were loaded into the gift wagon, And such
is the stage of the observance today. Although the-times are too hard to allow people
to give with their former spontaniety, they
will give liberally, and the poor will be substantilly relieved,
The Ladies’ Aid Society. has been the
vehicle for distributing the accumulated
gifts to the needy, They are continually
relieving ‘cases of destitution, and they
know best where the family stores are required, They welcome Donation Day as
the great event of the year, and it makes
the hearts of the good ladies swell with
gratitude when they see the offerings pour
in to the receptacle in @ generous manner,

spectacular drama, The Rose of Killarney,”
was the play presented, _ lt'is a rather light

A MORTGAGE.
It is & Good Thing For Somebody /Eist's
7 Family.
A mortgage makes a man rustle and it
keeps him poor, An exchange remarks
that it is a strong incentive to action, and a
wholesale remainder of the fleeting months
and years, It is fully as symbolical in its
nieaning as the hour-glass and scythe that
meant death, A mortgaye represents industry, because it is mever idle; night or day.
It is like a bosom friend, because the greater
the adversity the closer it sticks to a fellow.
It is like a brave soldier, for it never hesitates at charges, nor fears to close in on
the enemy. It is like the sand-bag on the
thug—silent in application, but deadly in
effect. It is like the hand of Providence
—it spreads all over creation,, and its influence is everywhere visible. Lt is like
the grasp of the devil-tish—the longer it
holds the greater its strength. It will exercise feeble energies, and lend activity to a
sluggish brain; but,no matter how debtors
work, the mortgage works harder still. A
mortgage is a good thing to have in the
family—provided, always, it is in somebody else’s family.
