Smith were discharged from the county jail today. The former served 10 days for disturbing the peace, the latter 20 days for the same offense. : 3 Charles E. Clinch has beem, elected Chief Engineer of the Grass Valley Fire Department. Philip ‘Trezise was elected First Assistant, and W.G. Lord Second Assistant. J. Basterson and Frank Soue, the two Indians held in the county jail as witnesses in the case of selling liquor to Indians at Truckee, were released today. They will appear when wanted. Thomas Stewartson, an old resident of this city, claims that he was knocked down. last night, near the Nevada foundry, and robbed of $5. Nine applieants for teachers certificates presented themselves for examination before the County Board of Education today. Seven of them are females. ; 9S Declared Insane. Thomas Schofield, a young man from Grass Valley, was examined today by Drs. Hunt and Mullerand pronounced insane. He will be taken to Napa tomorrow. a Taken Down to Plead. Hodge and Billows, the Grass Valley young men arrested at Lincoln the Avery’s livery stable at Gaass Valley under false pretenses, were taken from the county jail to Grass Valley today, to plead to the charge. Miss Lucy Tyrrell, one of San Juan’s popular school teachers, arrived here Saturday on a visit to her folks. Miss Bessie Goyne, one of Nevada City’s popular young ladies, who is attending school at Berkeley, arrived here Saturday to spend the holidays with her folks. The Truckee Republican Sold. F. M. Rutherford, Principal of the Truckee public schools, and Charles M. Byan of that place, have purchased the Truckee Republican from Willard P. Calkins, and will continue it as a semi-weekly paper. Mr. Calkins has been editor and proprietor of the paper for the past three years and a half, and has made a good paper of it and been very successful. He intends to go below and embark in business, and being a popular, wide-awake young man, he will doubtless meet with success. Aside from his newspaper career he has figured some in politics, being the Republican candidate for County Clerk two years ago. The new proprietors of the Republican are fully competent to conduct the paper. Mr. Ryan is a practical printer and has been employed in the office for some time. We wish them success. The contract to sink the incline at the Milliken ranch mine 500 . feet deeper has been let to Adolph Rosenthal, Elmer Hitchcock, Henry Richards, Leon Durbin, James Gallagher and F. J. Wells, for $2.85 per foot. The parties who bid to do the work for $2.18 per foot withdrew their bid, and the contract was given the next lowest bidders.
