How Rose Did Up the Gamewell Fire
Alarm People.
More new developments regarding
the disappearance of R. A. Rose, the
former Pacific Coast agent of the
Gamewell Fire-Alarm and Telegraph
company, are coming to the surface. It
is the talk among men in his line of
business in San Francisco that his company is loser by $35,000 through him.
The Gamewell Company at 19 Barclay street, New York, is writing to
cities that have put in the alarm system, as Nevada City did, saying:
Warrants as per contracts should be
made only to this company by warrants,
orders, checks or drafts to the order of
its treasurer, H. F, Bender, and mailed
to him at the above named address in
New York. Very truly yours,W. H. Wotverton,
: Vice-President.
The payments made by this city so far
($30 monthly) for the system have gone
tothe company’s accredited agent, but it
is evident he has not turned them in
to his employers,
The following letter in Rose’s defense
was published in yesterday’s Alameda
Argus: Bey :
After reading the paragraph in Saturday’s Argus I called upon Mrs. Rose
in San Francisco-and ascertained that:
(1) Mr. Rose has not disappeared
as stated nor has he endeavored to conceal his identity. His wife has beenin
communication with him during his
absence and has heard from him quite
recently, and he will certainly be home
this week.
(2) It is true, he no longer represents the Gamewell Fire Alatm Co. of
New York, but Mrs. Rose has a dispatch from the firm which: shows that
their anxiety to locate him has been
exaggerated.
:
(8). It was Mr. Rose’s custom to be
absent from home on business trips for
weeks at atime. His present absence
arises from his own personal. affairs
and not from any desire to conceal his
whereabouts from his employers orany
one else.

Dennis has-been mourned for years. as

The mother of the wanderer, Mrs.

upward of 90 years of age. The successful miner has already remembered
ri relativés, and has sent: money to
hem,
Such was the sensatiunal story telegraphed out from the East last week
and published under scare heads by
the San Francisco papers. The TRansORIPT at once surmised that the
telegram was a fairy story and so announced. :
Today we heard from Sierra county.
The people there are enjoying a broad
grin over Dennis’s alleged wealth. The
old fellow is working on the Sierra
Valley ranch of E. H. Hamlen, Jr., the
drover. He gets eighteen a month and
found, and bas been around there for
years. He is happy and contented and
is more amused than anybody else
at the yarn about his rich mines.

For many years the store of Wm. G.
Richards, the Broad street grocer, has
deservedly ranked as one of the busiest and most popular business houses. .
in the county. Its patronage is built
up on merit and there is consequently
a steady growth in its magnitude. Mr.
Richards’ business plan is to sell the
very finest class of goods at uniformly
low prices—to serve the public “on
honor” and thus retain their confidence
and trade.
At present the store is making a
specialty of choice holiday goods, such
lemon peel, canned delicacies of all

CITY OF WHITE HOUSES.
Good Old Sipe.
several years past until last summer
every color of the rainbow has been
shown nearly every hue on its side and
roof. But now all this is changing.
The somber slate, the rich red, the pastoral green, the gorgeous yellow and
the modest cream are fast disappearing,
and the cheerful, cleanly old style of a
spotless white body and a red, slate or
natural roof, is coming in. Property
owners say that itis economy to paint
they can be touched up here and there
to look like new, while if they were in
color they would have to be gone all
over by the painter. Some people complain that the glare of thesun ona city
of white houses is bound to eventually
make everybody’s eyes weak, but the
general suggestion that follows this
criticism is, “Go and. buy a pair of
smoked glasses.”
