Michael Shea, one of theold-time Fesidents of Moores Fiat, passed away at that place last night at about eight o'clock. He had been a sufferer from asthma for upwards of ten years, and for Some time past his friends noticed that he was gradually growing worse. He hed reached the allotted span of life—three score years and ten—and settled in Moores Flat in 1860, He followed mining for a long time and always took an active part in any movement tending to the welfare of his home town, Under the old Jaw he held the position of: Road Overseer in Eureka township, and was also elected Constable for several terms. In both capacities he made a painstaking and faithfal othcer, and his constituency greatly appreciated his efforts. The deceased frequently visited this city inan official capacity some years ago, and was quite well known to a@namber of ourcitizens. He was a man whose general appearance indicated a sincerity of purpose in every thing he undertook. He belonged to the noble band of pioneers that made Nevada county what it is, and whose ranks are constantly growing lees by the ‘heavy hand of Death. He emigrated\from Ireland when quite a young man, and after residing in the Eastern States for some time he headed for the golden shores of Oalifornia, After spending a number of years in the lower part of the State he came to Nevada ‘county, and shortly afterwards he located-at Moores Flat. The public reception tendered the people Saturday evening by the Grass Valley Union in honor of the completion of their new home was one of the grandest affairs ever held in the coanty. Great crowde took advantage of the opportunity to view the magnificent building, wherein is installed a printing plant that is a credit to the energetic and progressive epirit of its owner as well as to the county in which it operates, Everything had been pre-arranged to handle the vis{tors in a such manner as to abrogate the confusion and turmoil usually incident upon such occasions, and that no bitch or. break ccecurred tomar the evenness of the evening was another illustration of the excellent mAnagement under which the Union thrives. Visitors on entering were met by pretty and vivacious dameels in whose hands the cup of nectar proved a sparkling and crystal draught. All the while music discoursed ite delightful strains and polite and courteous attendants clear the intricacies of one of the greatest of modern inventions. To further lessen the difficulties of grasping more fully the involationary nature of the great machines part of the large Sunday daily was set, printed and ran off, thereby leesening the problems of the mechanisms. Last evening the management and its employes gave a banqaet to which a large number were present who enjoyed themselves immensely, and thus brought to a close one of the most memorable events in the history of.the Union, and one which is a pleasing attest to the rapid strides which printing A girlis wanted to do general house: work. T. Byoon placed one of them in her nostril. All efforts ty remove it, on the part of the parents, proved futile, and it was necessary to call Dr. Muller, who quickly Temoved the foreign sabstance. No ill effects will result, Judging from the large number of small Christmas trees and holly berries brought to town yesterday afternoon from the neighboring hillsides it is evident that there are to be many family gatherings and: reunions on Obristmas Day in this community, The Leap Year Ball Great interest is being manifested in the leap year party that the Native Daughters of Laurel Parlor will give on New Year’s night. The committee having the affair in charge intend to have it eclipse any like party given in this city for many years. Leap year always brings pleasant functions with it in society circles, and the coming event will be made a very enjoyable party. Strict leap year rules are to be-observed, and enay gentleman who is discovered in breaking any of them: will be curtly reprimanded, The floor management will be in the hands of the ladies, and that it will be satisfactorily conducted goes without saying. The Laurelites know how to please the party goers, and when it comes to a leap year™ball they take particular pains to keep up. their reputation as entertainers,Siruck Fine Ore. The tributers who started to work in the Wyoming mine a short time ago are doing exceptionally. well and it is quite probable that they will continue to find profitable employ ment there for some time, A day or two ago they were fortunate in uncovering a ledge of fine looking ore, and experts say that it isthe same class of rock which enabled the old Wyoming to pay big dividends for a long number of years. Back From the North Thomas Moroney, of Cherckee, who was bart in a hydraulic mine near Bullion, British Columbis, last spring, arrived here last night.
