The tour of the Secretary of Agriculture through the South, made especially for the purpose of ‘studying the conditions and possibilities.of that section, and the advantages of a diversification of its agricultural interests, is in marked contrast with the methods of his Democratic predecessor, and must strike the Democratic as well as Republican farmers of the South and the ‘country in general assuch. It will be remembered that Mr. Wilson’s Democratic predecessor, Secretary Morton, spent most of his time studying up plans to prevent the distribution of seeds to the farmers of the country, discouraging the beet-sugar proposition THE RIGHT “LAGE 10 BUY Your Fancy Groceries an and Provisions for . * Christmas, Don’t forget that W. G. Richards, who keeps the zrocery store next door to the Gity Hall, uot only keeps a store but that he keeps constantly in stock the best and freshest. goods in his line of business. His plan of the distribution of seeds to the farmers of the county is an intelligent and likely to be accépted one and ‘his tour of the South, in which the diversification of agriculture has been neglected, shows that his work is likely to be of very great value to the agricultural interests, and, when supple mented with the demand for agricul tural products which foilows the revival of industries and the protective tariff, means prosperity for the farmers of every section. In A NUMBER of the. counties of the State newspaper publishers, Democratic and Republican, will demand that hereafter a plank be placed iu the political platforms requiring all nominees to pledge themselves if elected to have their printing done at or through some printing office in their respective counties. It isa nice*state of affairs when the newspaper men are compelled to resort to such extreme measures to protect themselves, especially when working in season and out of season for their counties. It is an outrage for county offices to have printing sent to Sacramento, Oregon and Kan:as, or to give their orders to parties not en-. , gaged in the printing business. And. ‘ judging from the tone of some of our exchanges a red-hot time is in store for the guilty ones in the future. FINE FANCY GROCERIES. Articles That Are Needed During the Holiday Season. The feasting and merry-making customary at Christmas time is always looked forward to with pleasure by old and young. In order to prepare the usual dishes and the many delicacies served on that occasion, it is necessary that the cook be furnished with proper ingredients. It is also essential, if the best results are desired; that the articles used be of the very finest quality. P. G. Scadden, at Lis store on Commercial street, has a large stock of everything in the grocery line, and will fill your orders promptly. His goods are fresh and of the finest quality—two important facts to be considered. Mince meat in bulk or in packages, equal to the best home-made product, and for less money than you can make it. Fresh sweet potatoes are something of a luxury at this season, but they can be procured at Scadden’s. He has just received a lot of fancy crackers in boxes, also new crop raisins, currants, citron, lemon and orange peel and cranberrivs. Also fine canned pineapple, fancy preserves in bottles and jars and a host of other vice things.
