A Russian shopkeeper recently posted
the following announcement in front
of his place of business. “The reason
why Ihavehitherto been unable to sell
my goods so much cheaper than anybody else is that Iam a bachelor, and
do not need ‘to make profit for the
maintenance of a wife and children.
It is nuw my duty to inform the public
that this advantage will shortly be
withdrawn from them; as I am about
to be married. They will, therefore,
do well to make their purchases at once
at the old rate.”

TuHE Sierra Railroad is béing rapidly
extended from Jamestown to Sonora,
the county seat of Tuolumne County,
and it is expected that the extension
will be ready for traffic soom after the
opening of the new year. A considerable increase in the rate of mining
development and a decrease in the cost
of mining oporations should follow.
The number of similar branch railroads
which the mining regions of California
sadly need could be numbered in
dozens.

For many years the store of Wm. G.
Richards, the Broad street grocer; has
deservedly ranked as one of the busiest and most popular business houses
in the county. Its patronage is built
up on merit and there is consequently
a steady growth in its magnitude. Mr‘
Richards’ business plan is to sell the
very finest class of goods at uniformly
low prices—to serve the public “on
honor” and thus retain their confidence
and trade.
At present the shen is making a
specialty of choice holiday goods, such
as mince meat, orange, citron and
lemon peel,.canned delicacies of all
kinds, etc.
