Where Language Ran Out.
Baron Cassiers, when he first came
to this country, made a trip to Lexington on behalf of a friend of his in Paris
who asked him to secure a very fine
horse. While in Lexington ‘he was
treated most hospitably. Although he
did not speak the best of English, he
found himself getting along handsomely with the Kentuckians. On the afternoon of the first day he inquired of
one of his entertainers, “Should I de_sire to invite the gentleman to drink,
how should I say it?”
The enthusiastic Bourbonite replied,
“Will you do me the honor, sir, todrink
with me, sir?”
“It is very good,” replied the baron;
“bat if the gentlemen asked me to
drink what should I say?”
“The plan here is to slap him on the
back, sir, and say, ‘It gives me great
pleasure, sir, to drink with you.’”
“I¢ is very good,” replied the baron,
“but if Iam satisfied and don’t want to
drink any more and wish to decline an
offer to drink, what would I say? ”
“You are a fool” replied the astounded Kentuckian. “There is no expression in the English language to
cover that idea.”

Specialities For the Holidays.
For many years the store of Wm. G.
Richards, the Broad street grocer, has
deservedly ranked as one of the busiest and most popular business houses
in the county.. Its patronage is built
up on merit and there is consequently
a steady growth in its magnitude. Mr*
Richards’ business plan is to sell the
very finest class of goods 4t uniformly
low prices—to serve the public “on
honor” and thus retain their confidence
and trade.
At present the store is making a
specialty of choice holiday goods, such
as mince meat, orange, citron and
lemon’ peel, canned delicacies of all
kinds, etc.
