Catches Aflre While Distributing Gifts at Blas Tent Last Evening. * There was a Christmas tree out at. the Blue Tent schoolhouse last evening for the entertainment of the children and Perry. Arbogast, a well-known young man, who was personating Santa Claus, had a narrow escape from being incinerated. He was attired in the ron saint: \He had on a great wig and was covered with the same fluffy magifts to the merry throng, when sud: denly thé trimming on his coat came dles. In a moment: he was a mass of flames. The most intense excitement prevailed. Women and __ children screamed and the men in the audience Sprang to his assistance. The young ‘taan preserved his presence of mind, ut his efforts to put out the fire were unavailing and a serious catastrophe seemed imminent. Then some of the men pulled off their coats and wrapping them about him soon had the fire smothered. Mr. Arbogast’s. eyebrows and hair were singed, and~it is indeed fortunate that he escaped without any more serious injuries. BRIM FULL OF FUN, Seats For Monday Night's Show In DeIand at Foley's. In speaking of that farcical cotiedy, “Two Married Men,” the Salem, Oregon, Statesman of December 9th, says : “George R. Edeson’s farce comedy, ‘Two Married Men,’ was presented at the Reed last evening to a large house. The dbject of the performance, ‘just to make you laugh,’ was certainly accomplished by the company inits portrayal of the play, which abounds in ludicrous situations from start to finish. The specialties introduced during the three acts, which are brim full of fun, are all good. The company is an exceptionally strong one, and the performance numbers amiong the best of the farce-comedies ever seen in this city. Patton Bros, are to be congratulated upon securing such splendid attractions for the theatre-going public of Salem.” ~ The company will appear here next Monday evening. SEC EO Wee Beatle At the Churches Tomorrow, At the Congregational church tomorrow a Christmas discourse will be delivered by the pastor, Rev. J. Sims, in the morning. In the evening an old fashioned Christmas concert will be given in connection with which there will be recitations, solos, anthems, carols, etc. The Christian’ Endeavor will meet at the usual hour led by Miss Stevens. Subject, “Truths Sabbath school at the close of the morning service. At the Methodist church Rev. Walter Myron Lowell will occupy the pulpit. in the morning, his subject being “The King of Kings.” New members willbe received at the morning service, The Epworth League will meet at 6 p. m. In the evening the pastor, Rev. J. W. Phelps, will preach. .At St. Canice church -there will be masses at six, eight and half-past ten o’clock a.m. That at 10:30 will be a high mass (Emerson’s, in E flat), and the Adeste Fidelis by V. Nuvello will also be sung. There will bea choir of twenty singers accompanied by a full orchestra, all under the direction of Prof. J.R. Davis. The music will be among the best ever heard at any church service in Nevada City. o@eo A Pioneer Odd Fetlow. of the Odd Fellows Lodge at North San Juan, died on the 12th instant at Los Angeles where he had lived since leaving Plumas county in 1894, In 1852 he came to this coast from Indiana and was for some time a resident of Nevada and Yuba counties. He was perhaps the oldest Odd Fellow in the State, having jcined the order at New Harmony, . Indiana, in the early forties.
