The Famous Cliff House Destroyed by Fire, } The Cliff House, which is known all over the world as ‘one of San Francisco’s famous resorts, has been destroyed by fire, Visi-~ tors and pleasure seekers to California never thought their trip completed until a drive was taken to the cliff. It has been visited by Genera] Grant, the Princess Louise and the'Marquis of Lorne, ex-President Harrison and many others, The place was opened October 15, 1863, To P. B. Cornwall the first meal was served, Captain J, R. Fester held the lease for twenty years and Moss & Sheldon sneceeded him for three years. After that. Mr. Wilkins assumed control, For about fifteen years the property has belonged to Adolph Sutre, He purchased the property from ©, ©, Butler and the Buckley estate, Mr. Sutro had no insurance on the building: Among the historical pictures saved was a photcgraph of the pioneers of California. It is a very rare photograph, as it was take @in” the ’50’s and contains the pictures of 452 pioneers. The picture, Uncle Billy’s Dream,” was destroyed. Old-timers remember Billy and George who kept a saloon where the Sacramento steamers used to land, Adolph Sutro stood by and watched the Cliff House burn while his memory traveled back through the vanished years as he remem-. bered the famous men and women who stood upon the balcony facing the Seal Rocks and the Pacifie Ocean. Mr, Sutro intends to build an elegant hotel on the Present site. It was on January 16, 1887, that about 70,000 pounds of dynamite were exploded on board the schooner Parallel, which had been blown on to the beach, It shattered the western wall of the Cliff House and Point Lobos Station, The victory of Mr. Sutro over the railroad in securing @ 5-cent fare within the last few months has brought the place more “prominently before the public, Memento hunt~ ers'Will be out in full force hunting for relies to keep as souvenirs of tle building which was deatroyed as the year 1894 ig passing Attention, Native Daughters.
