Established Sept. 6, 1860. by Nat. P. Brown & Co. NEVADA CITY, NEVADA ©O., CALIFORNIA Proprietors BROWN & CALKINS. SA Ee DEC. 2741897. AFTER ANY NEW Tii:NG. The rapid decadence of the silver Proposition as a campaign issue has driven “Coin” Harvey and his associates to a mad search for any new scheme which will catch a vote and re-. outdone jn border warfare with the tain their grip upon that element of the voting population to which they appealed with the 16-to-1 idea in 1896. A vote is to be taken in the lodges of their secret order, known: as “American Patriots,” on the second Tuesday of next month, upon a series of propositions with an idea of testing their ‘popalarity. Among the propositions are paper currency redeemable in “metallic money” irrespective of the metal used, paper money not redeemable at all, the demonetization of gold and silver and substitution of Government paper, money, socialism, single tax, income tax, a direct vote by the people on all political issues, and the free and unlimited coinage of silver at 16 to 1 without reference to its actual value in the markets of the world. THEY HAVE NO COMPLAINT. Has anybody heard any complaints from the hundreds of thousands of railroad men who voted for McKinley sud sound money last year? The railroad earnings, which have steadily increased since the revival of prosperity immediately following the election of 1896, continue to grow, the November earnings of 104 railroads showing an increase of 21 per cent over November of the preceding year, being the largest gain ‘which any month of the calendar year has presented when compared with the ee month of the preceding year. Tue pleasure of Mr. Bryan’s triumphant tour through Mexico will probably be somewhat reduced by the news that wheat sdld -at $1.09 in Chicago last week. , SS Reduced Railroad Rates. In consideration of the enorthous passenger traffic that the Southern Pacific Company will have during Jubilee Week, the following reduction of rates has been offered by it in a communication to the Jubilee Transportation Committee. The reduced rates to San Francisco and return are based on the existing first-class single trip limited rates: 5 From stations within 125 miles from San Francisco, one and one-third fare. From stations between 125 and 200 miles from ~an Francisco, one and onefifth fare. From stations outside the 200 mile limit, one fare for the round trip. An Ingiana Ranch Prospect, The Democrat says that W. Wolf of San Francisco, who has been at Dobbins Ranch for some time prospecting, has “found such a promising: claim on Joseph Merriam’s land that he will put up asmall mill for the purpose of testing it. He says there are half a dozen locations in that vicinity which ture of money to fully develop them, and if the present venture is a success the small prospect mill will be used by himself and “associates to open another claim near by. s2@e--—— A Jolly Christmas. Dinner. A party of gentlemen had an oldfasiioried bachelordinner at the Union hotel Christmas night. The amount of food and drink disposed of and the degree of hilarity that prevailed brought back with vividness memories of the Christmas dinners hereabout in the early fifties. No Cure—No Pay. Lyon, Forest Springs, ". weather is again close at hand will the alteration in its web to suit the weather. “. Schilling’s Best. The Patére of the Rea Man, Having briefly reviewed some of onz past history, the fact mnst be admittea that when the white men first visited our shores we were kind and confiding, marble before the sculptor, ready to be shaped into noblemanhood. Instead of this, we were oftener hacked to pieces and destroyed. It is useless to deny the charge that at times we have been goaded. to vindictive and cruel acts. Some of my own tribe, however, were soldiers in the orthern urmy during the civil war. ome of them were taken and held prisoners in the rebel prisons, and the eruelty which, according to the tales they tell, was witnessed there was never ecalping knife and tomahawk, and ‘yet I believe that had the northern people been placed in the south under like circumstances their prisoners of war would have been treated with similar cruelty. It was the result of a desperate effort to save an expiring cause. TI believe there is no reasonable person, well grounded in United States history, who will not-admit that there were ten times as many who perished miserably in southern prisons as have been killed by our people since the discovery of America. I recall these facts not to censure, but to show that cruelty «and revenge are the offspring of war, not of race, and that naturé has placed no impassable gulf between us and civilization. While I most heartily indorse the present policy of the government in dealing with our people, I must‘admit, to be true to my own convictions, that Iam worried over the ration system, under which so many of our people are being fed on the reservations. 1 greatly fear it may eventually vagabondize many of them beyond redemption. It ‘permits the gathering of lazy, immoral white men of the worst stamp, who spend their time in idleness and in corrupting Indian «morality.—Simon Pokagon in Forum. Spiders as Weather Prophets. One of the best of weather prophets is the spider. If there happens to be a web in the secluded corner of the porch, watch it carefully fora few days or weeks, and the ‘spider will unfailingly predict the coming of storms. When a high wind or a heavy rain threatens, the spider may be seen tak ing in sail with great energy—that is, ‘shortening the rope filaments that sustain the web structure. If the storm is to be nnusnally severe or of long duration, the rop2s are strengthened as well as shortened, the better to resist the onset of the elements. Not until pleasant ropes be lengthened as before. On the contrary, wien you see the spider running out the slender filaments it is certain that calm, fine weather has set in, whose duraticn may be measured by their elongation. , Every 24 hours the-spider makes some If these changes are made toward evening, just before sunset, a five, clear night may be safely counted upon. Whet the spider sits quiet and dull in the middle of its web, rain is not far cff. If it be active, however, and continues so during ‘a shower, then it wil) te of brief doarition, and sunshine will fcllow.—Chicago Record. Men With Memories, The advantages of good memory to the historian are obvious, and we find 1t said of Gibbon that when he had once read a book it was of no further use to him; it was as a sucked orange and . could be thown away. -Carlyle like. ‘wise had-a prodigiously retentive mind, while of Macaulay’s prowess in this line there are many stories told. He cduld read a book in the tithe it would ‘take ‘another man to cut ‘the Teaves, and, notwithstanding this lightning . rapidity, he knew it all perfectly. Ounce, when crossing the Irish channel, he repeated to himself the whole of ‘‘Paradise Lost,’? and it was said that if all Milton’s works -were lost Macaulay could have restored them from memory. While waiting in a Cambridge coffee bouse for a post chaise he picked’ up.a country newspaper containing two -political -pieces,, which ‘he read ‘once gprongh and never thought of again for 20 years, when he was able to repeat them Without the change of a single standing before them like a block of.
