The Origin of “Linger.”
A correspondent sends the following
derivation of the term ‘‘linger :’’ ‘‘Early
in the forties there moved from Vermont to one of the then flourishing cotton manufacturing villages of New
Hampshire a man with a large family
of children, to keep one of. the corporation boarding houses. He was a tall,
lank dyspeptic. There was but one shoe
store in the village; in the rear of the
store was aroom for making and repairing shoes. Here was a Frenchman,
and a lover of mischief. One day the:
tavern keeper entered the shop and said:
‘Hello! Are you a shoemaker?’ ‘Yes,’
was the answer, ‘and linger at it.’ The
Frenchman caught on, and in a day or
two there was hung outside the’ building, with other store’ goods, probably
the most uncouth, bunglingly made pair
of shoes ever seen on the continent,

village had looked them over. From
that day the members of the dyspeptic’s
family were known as ‘lingers.’ And
the word was applied to everything as a
superlative, toa finé yoke of oxei or a
big fish.’’—Boston Jorunal.
The Thoughtful Chauncey.
A good story is told on Chauncey Depew. He received a letter from a young
married friend. in Albany asking for a
pass for his mother-in-law, ‘who was
coming to make him a visit; and closing
with the delicate hint, ‘‘Don’t forget to
have the return coupon attached.’’ Mr.
Depew is nothing’ if not worldly wise
and sympathetio, and in sending the pass
he wrote, ‘‘I have not neglected the return coupon and have limited it to three
days. ’’—Minneapolis Journal,
ee SCARING A DOG.
An Experiment That Can Hardly Be Called
a Howling Success.
Bill Jones of Happy Valley came into
the office the other day and said he had
found out a good way.to scare a dog. He
said he didn’t'see: any sense in wanting
to shoot a dog or bé crue] to dumb brutes
by poisoning, ’em when there were ways
enough to just scare ’em and in that
keep ’em from biting you. He said, just
to show his good faith before we printed
the recipe in The News, we might go
down street past’ Oldfeller’s place and
try his dog once. So we started out with
him.
Jones took his umbrella, and as we
walked along he showed us how the old
thing worked. He asked us to walk just
ahead, and he played we were in the
position of the dog and wanted us to
growl. When we made a noise, he rushed at us with the umbrella, opening and
shutting it inrather astartling manner.
By and by we reached Oldfeller’s
place, but didn’t see the dog. Then
Jones growled like and uted, ‘*Sic
’em, Towser!’’In about a second and
a half Towser came flying around the
fence.corner, and Jones just) had time to
lower his umbrella when the charge
was made. Towser made a rush like a
tralley car half a block ahead of you.
Jones‘ parried and worked the slide on
the umbrella handle. The next instant
the dog hada mouthful of a $4 umbrella
cover and two ribs out of the same.
Jones expectorated a mouthfal of tobacco
juice in Towser’s eye and then told him
he could haye the remainder of the.water cover, his remarks all prefaced with
adjectives never used in prayers.
We didn’t return to. the offiee together,
and. Jones said if we ever printed the
