Thirty-five hundred pounds of ore designed to be worked at the five-stamp mill, which will be a feature of the mining exhibit, are now on the way to San Francisco from this county, and large quantities are about to be shipped from other mining districts in the State, The first exhibit to arrive, however, consisted of seventeen cases of cements, gold-bearing gravels, etc., from the Golden river mines at Red Point, Placer county. There are in all fully two carloads of mineral matter already on hand and waite ing to be given placa in the exhibit, The quartz mill will have a building by icself. This will be 50x26 feet ih size, and will be located just outside of the Mechanic Arts bnilding, to the seuth. In it will be contained not only thé mill inself, but all the latest appliances for the working of all kinds of gold-bearing ores, as it is the intention of those in charge to show all the different processes employed in actual mining. Nevada county hag adopted a handseme design for the individual exhibit, Architect Swain of San Francisco having made the plans. The prominent feature will be a large gilded sphere, supposed to represent a solid lump of gold of the value of $250,000,0 0, this being the amount of the total gold output of this county since mining began here, s FRIDAY, DECEMBE2 29, 1893. Treadwell and son were returning from the Gold Bank Tunnel, an accident occurred by which the former was badly hurt, They had Thomas Codn’s horse and buggy. It was rather dark when they reached Eph, Herring’s place, about a mile from town, and in driving over the ditch-crossing thi side of there one of the buggy wheels went into a deep-chuck hole, the sudden jar throwing both of the occupants out, Mr, ‘Preadwell received a bad cut on the “head and was bruised considerably. His son escaped unhurt. The horse rau away and came into town, passing down Broad stree: at a rattling gait. He turned into Union street and the buggy collided with a post at the City Hotel. The shafts snapped ofi and the horse broke loose from the vehicle. He was afterwards caught on Aristocracy Hill. The top of the buggy was pretty wel demolished and one of the springs was badly twisted, Sentilles nee abel ac THE NOTORIOUS BANDIT. Chris. Evans Escapes from the Fresno Jail Last Night. Will Ask the County to Assist. several days ago of the proposed new road from Washington to the California nine, a distance of six miles, Considerable money has been raised by private subscription towards building the road, and next week Col. C, W. Tozer, Superintendent of the Gaston Ridge Mining Company, will go before the Board of Supervisors and ask them to make an appropriation to help put the road through, with the understanding that when the road is finished it will be turned over to the county. As the road will be a great convenience and is much desired by the people of that section, we presume the Board will give the proposition favorable consideration, +80 a May Not Take It. — Some time ago the Bellefontaine quartz mine, situated in Willow Valley, and which is owned by W. H. Smith and others, was bonded to parties for $25,000. It will not be long before the bond expires, and if the parties do not take it the company will sell 25,000 shares of stuck and use the money thus raised to build a mill, Developments lately made in the mine are very encourag~ ing and if there was a mill on the ground the property could be worked at a hand. some profit, 3 Specimen Cases, — 8. Van Eman, who is declared by the directory to be the manager of the Savage Commercial Company, says if charges ef embezzlement are prefer red against him and he is locked up that he will tell some thinga which will startle the town and cause an explosion: M. J. Brandenstein says that Van Eman isavery pleasant fellow and comes ofa good family. He therefore thinks that Van Eman or his family should make good the amount in dispute. This sum is greatly in excess ef what was reperted and is now said by those acting in the interest of the dix rectory to be $3800. _ “I do not know that the amount is $3800 and I have not declared it,” said Mr. Brand enstein, ‘That sum may have been taken at haphazard, It may be what is shown by the books so far as pending investigations have gone. Ido not say that it is, however,” The position of Van Eman: seems to be an anomalous one. Though those unfamiliar with the business of the Savage Commercial Company have supposed that he was its manager, Mr, Brandenstein declares that this is not true, “Van Eman is not the manager,” said he, ‘*The business is a small one, 80 small, in fact, that it employed but one man to golicit custom. ‘1kat man was Van Eman, but he has never been the manager.” Mr, Brandenstein holds that Van Eman is merely an employe of the company. Van Eman, when the case comes up in court, may attempt to’ demonstrate that this view isa faulty one, and that as the mavager and as one interested in the corporation his actions are to be looked upon in a different light than that in which the directory seems inclined to view them. Brandenstein & Co. and assigned his business, or a portion of it, te the senior partner of that firm. Fer the past year or more the business has been under the supervision of Mr. Van Eman. The position now seems to be about this: If Van Eman can or will raise the amount in dispute and make it over to the directory matters will be dropped. If not, criminal charges will be preferred and a prosecution will follow. In anticipation of the latter course, Van Eman is reported to have made the remark about the explosion which will follow the tale which he will tell, Beyond this he will say nothing. He will give no facts in the ease, and declares that he has nothing to say unless he is locked up, and then he Proposes to say a good desl, M. J. Brandenstein is very guarded in making his statements.
