An active canvass on the part of the
friends of Judge J. A. Waymire of Alameda
is being made with the object’ of securing
for him the Speakership: of the Afsembly,
Their efforts are being favorably inet in all
_ parts of the State, for the judZe-is one of the
—hest known and most honored citizens of
California. His record is one that -shows
him to be thoroughly titted for the place. He
is one of the most prominent and respected

‘A ‘Good Clean Up,
Telegraph : Once more the . parties working the Wisconsin mine hada clean up and
a very satisfactory one it was. The crushing was done at Soutliern’s mill and out of
the 90 loads of ore. something like $2,200
wis the result, not counting the sulphurets.
It is expected that fully $1000 will be the
yield from the sulphurets,
A Gloomy Session.
Congress-convenes this weék. The Democratic members will feel as though they had
been called together to attend a funeral,
while the Republican minority will swell up
with a sort of important air that will cause
the emerald green envy to spread over the
count :nances of their Democratic coll-agues.

Governor Markham Not a Candidate
for Senator.
“When I get through with my term of
office,” said the Governor yesterday to: an
Examiner reporter, ‘I shall return to Pasadena and engage as formerly in business.
I shall not practice law, _ for I gave that all
up on account of my health when: IF came to
this State. Ihave been admitted to prac‘tice in all the courts ofCalifornia, but 1
have never had a case and don’t want any.
“T shall not be a candidate for the United
States Senate. I don’t care what people
say. They said I would bea candidate for
noinination to Congress, ani again for the
Governorship, but I said one term was
enough for each, and I meant it, If the
Gubernatorial terin had been eight years in
stead of four I would not have taken it.’

Some of the Eastern Democrats are already talking up our Governor-elect as the
most available man to place in the field for
Vice-President in 1896. Stevenson ot ilinois aud Budd of California, they think,
would make a strong team. There is a
good deal in the suggestion, If there isa
‘Democrat west of the Rockies who could
carry the Pacific Coast for the national
ticket, it is Mr. Buad, the most popular
man of any party teday in California. But
what’s the matter with ‘Our Jim” for first
