APPLE-GROWING IN
NORTHERN CALIFORNIA.
. HE recent meeting of the Apple Growers Congress in
St. Louis illustrates the fact that the-seat, of apple
growing has shifted of late years in the Mississippi
valley. Formerly the bulk of the apples produced in
he United States was grown east of Ohio, in a belt ranging
from Northern Virginia to Vermont. New York and Pennsylvania were pre-eminently the apple growing States, but
apple growing crept along the Great Lakes and Michigan
became a great producer of the frait. With the settlement
of Oregon and. Washington, splendid territory for growing
apples was opened up.
But within the past thirty years apple growing has
_ trended to the Southwest from the Great Lakes, and its
greatest seat is now in the territory of which St. Louis is the
metropolis — Southern Illinois, Southern Iowa, Missouri,
Eastern Kansas and Northern Arkansas. The western plateau of the Ozark mountaius is. said to produce: the finest
apples now sent to Eastern markets. The largest apple orchards in the world are in Southwest Missouri and Eastern
Kansas, and ‘tree-planting is going on rapidly. Buyers
from all parts of the country and Europe swarm into that
region in the late summer and early fall contracting for the
crop in bulk. Nothwithstanding the enormous increase in
orchard acreage, the demand for first-class apples exceeds
the supply.Only recently it has been discovered that California is
one of the finest apple-growing countries on tlie globe. The
upper foothill region from Kern county to the Oregon line,
produces apples that for size, color, flavor and keeping qualities are unsurpassed. Im the valleys of the Coast Range
splendid apples'are grown. The Pajaro Valley, in Monterey
county, is justly celebrated for its Belle Fleurs, while the

The Company Incorporated and Stock to
be Sold. .
Fred Zeitler, one of the Directors of
the Champion Mining Company; and
B. N. Shoecraft, Secretary of the Company, arrived here this morning from
San Francisco on business, The
Champion Mining Company has been
incorporated with 125,000 sheres, ofa
par value of $5 each, and the compeny
owns the Champion, Merrifield, Prov=
dence, Wyoming, Nevada City and
Spatich mines. Every one of these
properties has yielded a large amount
of bullion and paid dividends, It is
contemplated to sell 100,000 shares,
and retain 25,000 shares in the treasury. The Champion. company has
been disbursing in Nevada Oity for
many years in the neighborhood of
$20,000 every month for labor, supplies, etc., and it is to the interest of
the business men to take a portion of,
the stock, and help along the contemplated improvements. Messrs, Zeitler
and Shoecraft are in this city for the
purpose-of selling stock and already
several business men have subscribed.
An entire new plant is to be placed on
the Merrifield, similar to the one on
the Empire at Grass Valley, and the
works will then be one of the best
equipped in the State. The incline
shaft is to be enlarged so that it will
be sixteen feet in the clear and then
work can be carried on more expeditiously. New hoisting works will
be erected on the Nevada City mine
and modern machinery put in place,
and this mine which produced so well
northern coast counties produce truit of the first quality.
Good apples are also grown in the Sacramento Valley. Formerly California imported apples from Oregon and Utah,
but now this State is shipping apples to the East. The
apple growing industry is rapidly expanding and developing,
and before many years elapse, apples will be among the
staple products of California. It is a surprising fact that
excellent winter-keeping apples are grown in the foothills of
Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado, Nevada and Butte counties,
alongside navel Oranges of fine quality. The ideal fruit
country is found when the apple and cherry will reach perfection side by side with*the orange, the lemon and the
apricot.
As an apple-growing section, there is not another
county in the State that cam discount Nevada county for
the growing to perfection of this fruit. There is a great
future awaiting the fruit-growers of Nevada County, and
the young man who will invest his time and money in the
raising of apples, prunes and other staple fruits will ina
few years realize big dividends on the money expended, for
the time is soon coming when there will be a great demand for our fruit, and superior facilities will be given for
shipping it to all parts of the world.
in former years, will again yield up
tion and reduction: plant will be pat’
up, and it will be equipped with the
latest and most approved epplisnces;
so that the percentage of gold lost will
be very small. These contemplated
improvements will not be ‘started until spring, but the machinery and material will be ordered at once, so that
when the weather is settled there will
be no delay.
