The Local Paper.
The efforts of any newspaper to buid up
a town, says an exchange, are practically
nullified unless it it backed up by business
men, A stranger turns from the news colume of a newspaper to the advertising pages
andifhe fails to find there the business
cards of the merchants and professional .tirms
he comes to the conclusion that the merchant is not appreciated, in which case. it
is a good place for him to keepclear of. No
town ever grew without an aetive assistance
>from its newspaper, Nor can papers grow
and build up their localities without the
assistance of thetown. Business men should
realize this and remember that in giving the
avpport to newspapers they are not only
building up their own business, but helping
to support that which is steadily working
for the benefit of the whole Somemnniy:

GENERAL THOMAS,
He Might Have Peen a ‘Southern Soldier

General William Mahone of Virginia
sat in Chamberlin’s, deeply interested
in a well bound volume of substantial
size. To a reporter who ventured to ask
the title of the book the general courteously said.
“Tt is made up of ‘Papers of the Military Historical Scciety of Massachusetts’
and contains critical sketches of some of
the leading Federal and Confederate
generals. .Fowas at tliat moment engaged

“T know a gocd deal more than this
book about Thomas’ predilection for the
southern cause. In passing throtigh the
‘tate on his way from Texas to New
York at the time that the legislature
was Weliherating on the question of secession; Lbomas said, with emphasis,
‘There is nothing for the south to-do
but to fight.’ It was well understood
that his eympathies wero with the people of his native section,

Virginia to offer-him an important
