" Hon. Niles Searls, formerly of this city, has tendered his resignation as Commissioner of the State Supreme Court. He leaves the bench full of honors, after long, able and faithful service. It is not his intention to resume the practice of law, as he has reached the ripe age of seventy-three years and feels that he is entitled to rest now. He will with his estimable wife continue to stay in San Francisco most of the year, returning to the old home here at intervals. It Pleased M’Kinley. The meeting which the President enjoyed most during his journey south was at a colored church known as the Ship of Zion at Montgomery, Ala. It belongs to the Methodist denomination aud everbody calls it The Ship for short. He went there from the reception at the State. house, accompanied by the mayor of Montgomery, and found the church packed and 10,000 or _ 15,000 colored ptople who could not obtain admission standing around outside. He stood in his carriage and bowed to them for a little time. Then they respectfully opened a way for him tothe church. An address of welcome delivered by a coal-black negro. the President says, was one of the most striking examples of oratory he ever heard, and after his reply, when the congreation sang My Country ‘Tis of Thee, he says he was almost lifted off his feet by the fervor of the voices. 2Oe Priest Elected a Pythian Knight. A Chicago dispatch of yesterday says: Father Walsh, a Catholic priest of this city, hag been elected a member of a Jocal lodge of the Knights of Pythias. His application for membership was made in the usual manner, and being favorably passed upon by the lodge, his election follewed withtout question, He admitted to-day that he had been electeda mumber of the organization with his consent, but said that he had not yet been initiated, and until this latter ceremony had taken place he could not be considered in any sense a member of the organization.
