JUDGE SEARLS RESIGNS.
Will Continue to Make His Home in
Sav. Francisco.
" Hon. Niles Searls, formerly of this
city, has tendered his resignation as
Commissioner of the State Supreme
Court. He leaves the bench full of
honors, after long, able and faithful
service. It is not his intention to resume the practice of law, as he has
reached the ripe age of seventy-three
years and feels that he is entitled to
rest now. He will with his estimable
wife continue to stay in San Francisco
most of the year, returning to the old
home here at intervals.
It Pleased M’Kinley.
The meeting which the President enjoyed most during his journey south
was at a colored church known as the
Ship of Zion at Montgomery, Ala. It
belongs to the Methodist denomination
aud everbody calls it The Ship for
short. He went there from the reception at the State. house, accompanied
by the mayor of Montgomery, and
found the church packed and 10,000 or
_ 15,000 colored ptople who could not obtain admission standing around outside. He stood in his carriage and
bowed to them for a little time. Then
they respectfully opened a way for him
tothe church. An address of welcome
delivered by a coal-black negro. the
President says, was one of the most
striking examples of oratory he ever
heard, and after his reply, when the
congreation sang My Country ‘Tis of
Thee, he says he was almost lifted
off his feet by the fervor of the voices.

Priest Elected a Pythian Knight.
A Chicago dispatch of yesterday
says: Father Walsh, a Catholic priest
of this city, hag been elected a member
of a Jocal lodge of the Knights of
Pythias. His application for membership was made in the usual manner,
and being favorably passed upon by
the lodge, his election follewed withtout question, He admitted to-day that
he had been electeda mumber of the
organization with his consent, but said
that he had not yet been initiated, and
until this latter ceremony had taken
place he could not be considered in any
sense a member of the organization.
He said that he would endeavor to
~ ‘secure the approval of Archibishop Feehan of this city and of Archibishop Ireland of St. Paul to bis membership in
the order before finally becoming a
member.
