Ihave] Tao Spring street Te I Houses Petty Destroyed. _ Again about 5 o’closk this morning our citizens were awakened by the clanging of fire bells and an alarm from box No. twenty-four was turned in, The blaze. -was soon located ae the flames could be seen jamping high into the air from «house of ill repute on lower Spring street. The firemen responded promptly , _ with their apparatus and witbin a: “phort time feur streams were playing on the fire and the surrounding buildings. Itit had not been for the prompt a0tion, good work aud good fire-fighting apparatus it would not be. rash to . surmise that perhaps that. whole block, which consists of a large barn full of . hay aod a number of residences, would now be in ashes or badly damaged, bat as it is one house is badly gutted and the contents of another almost entirely destroyed by the water, although some of the farnitare was taken out. The fire was. noticed by Henry Guenther while coming down Boulder street and seeing W. H. Crawford in front of the National Hotel shouted to -. him to turn in an ‘alarm. Mr. Oraw‘. ford stepped to the door of ‘the hotel and called Nightwatohman Granville, who hastened to the alarm box in front . of Mra. Lutz’s restaurant and rang up the namber. Hese Company No. 1 was the first on the scene and stretched a line of hoge from in front of the hotel and up the alley. By the time the water was turned on Pennsylvania Engine Company, No, 2, appeared with hose stretched from the corner of Pine. and Spring streets and later two other hydrants were brought into use. Attention was first given to the house known asthe “Leader,” but the roef of the adjoining house, the *Palace,” Caught and things looked serious for a time. Later the large -barn “of the Downieviile’ Stage Oompany wan threatened but as there was no wind and;the pressure of water was good, the firemen were in complete control and im twenty. minates after the first sound of the bell the flames were extinguished and only a.few simmering coals were alive. After the big hose had done all it could, and in order to keep from doing.any more damege by water than was absolutely. necessary, the reducer recently adopted by Oompany No. 1, was put in use and a’ stream sent ee inch gardon hose, Phia!}contrivance showed its value in putting out the small blazes and lessening the damage and it is probable that the other companies will also get one, The fire started in the basement of the “Leader,” whieh was not occupied one of the rooms of the otber bouse, the window of which had been left open, and the inmate was almost suffosated before she awakened, The rest of the inmates were awakened and got out with a few of their personal effects before the fire had gained much headway. There is no doubt as to the origin of ' the fire asthe work of an incenndiary is very pluin and is left wide open. It was done by someone well acquainted with the premises. Those who were first on the ssene could plainly smell kenosene and an inspection of the basement revealed the cause. Near one of the poste of the underpiuning of the house was found a piece of partly burned paper and several charred pieces of shingles. For some reason it did aot bura much but the “fire-bug” did not intend to have his plans fall through so started another fire a short distance from it, which did the desired work. Entrance was gained through a back door, One-night, about six weeks ago, the people in the house neticed smoke coming from down steirsand on making an inspection found that the cloth ing on a bed was burning fiercely. The flames were extinguished before apy damage, save the destroying of ths bed clothing, was done. It is thought probable that the same party set both fires. As heretofore announcd in the Transonirt, the partially destroyed building was insured for $1800. ‘When the adjuster arrived bere the other day, after a consultation with Mr. Ieolta, it was arranged to select two competent carpenters to estimate the amount of fhe toes, After the latter made a thorough examination of i burned premises, they fixed the sum of $1400 as the proper estimate to be psid. This did not suit the adjuster and he eut the amount down to $1100. He contends that on account of the building having been somewhat old the property decreased in value since the issuance of the insurance policy, Mr. Isolta intended to re build the structure in good ehape and have it tbree stories high. Now that the cut in the insurance has been made, he says that he will be obliged to have it re-constructed on a two-story plan. . ae He aleo states that the rate charged by the company was bigh, and he feels justified in making a complaint in regard to the action on fhe part of the insurance men. This is not the first time that property-owners in this city have had occasion to censure insurance companies fo the adjustment of lesses sustained. In several instances there have been good grounds for the complainte, and our citizene are ‘becoming tired of way. The local sgente are not to blame in these mattérs, for they act in good faith. The adjusters are the men whe get in the “deadly work,” and the public is learning of it right along. NEW YEARS AT THE UNION. An Elegant Spread will be Served at this famous Hostelry To. morrow.
