VOL. LXVI--NO. 10192 reste SE NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA, MONDAY EVENING, DECEMBER 4, 1894. A SAD CONDITION 5 Of a Class of Poverty-Stricken People in San Francisco. Sawn Francisco, Dec. 4, 1893. Eprror Transvunier: A visit te the Sand Lot or to the rear of several Asylums and charitable institutions here, nowadays, will show what the times are, and at the same time what a,number of men there are in the world unfitted by nature to battle with its storms and trials succesfully. Thousands of men are out ef employment, some of them probably from choice, but many of them from necessity. A bright young fellow the other day, after having returned frem soliciting work in every direction, said, ‘‘it is a tough conditwo freight wagons last evening ahd started tion of affairs when a man who is able to work, is willing to work, and knows -how to work, has to beg to get a chance to do enough to earn his grub, and can’t get it even then.” There are hundreds and thotisands of such Possibly after the ice is once broken and their humiliation once. accomplished, many and thereafter become tramps. A short time since while at a friend’s house, I heard him asking an old fellow who was taking his breakfast which had by the servants, if ey treated him pretty well. ‘‘Yes,” said. the old man, ‘Mary is a good cuok and I enjoy niy meals here.” ‘You come pretty often, I suppose,” said the proprietor, _ ; *‘Ne, sir,” said the old man, ‘I only breakfast here once a week,” T was told the old fellow, who used to be well-to-do and still is liked, has his regular places to visit every day, where he is handed . ’ eut a good, substantial warm meal at every visit, 4 The servants in most of the fesidences here.are prepared and are ordered to pro-+ vide for the wants of’a few daily. The Salvation Army people are very active in helping to feed the hungry, and in assisting the needy to get work. They are doing a good work, and you hear little of the gibes and abuse they used to be accustomed to, Especially in cities are those people winning their way to the regard of the best classes and they deserve all the praise they receive. : There are societies whose mission it is te solicit and distribute flowers to the sick and needy and they are held up as models of charity. a The Salvationists are not so esthetical. They distribute more substantial diet. No person ever enjoyed the beauty of flowers when his stomach is gnawing with hunger. San Franciscans are a liberal peeple, Few go hungry if they make their wants knewn, Street-bummers are numerous and they ply. their vecation of soliciting alms, persistently day and aight: When. one drops onte a nickel he is fixed for a day, fer with his coin he can get a schooner of beer and a joitits, and if he captures a quarter heis rich indeed.’ Such fellows pick up enough daily to thrive upon, You meet one of them and‘ dislike to refuse donating a small coin for fear the mite may be worse needed than yeu need. it: yourself. = There are many ways to make a living and you will find reperesentatives of every way in San Francisco at present. The most unfortunate of all the needy is the fellow who has seen better days and atill'cherishes his pride—whe is too proud to beg, too honest to steal and has te con tent himself with the appellation of shabby genteel, Poverty te such ‘men is indeed a curse. They suffer more than they will admit, They get no sympathy; they hold up their heads as long'as their famished bodies will bear, if, and then as a last resort, to avoid a continuance, jump into the Bay, or creep intdé dome obscure spet and end their existenee, The thought of sueh a determina~ tion can be seen in the faces of many a man in cities, when times are hard, and the wonder is not that some do seek to end their miseries, but that mure do not, It is a weary world with so many unfortunates who are not built right and who have not ‘the ability to successfully struggle with the world, Public institutions, the city authorities and especially the Park Commissioners aim to supply as many men as they can in winter, The latter divide it up as much as pussible, They employ new gangs every month so.as to give as much relief as possible, The Mayor and City Council alse study te rélieve the willing by giving them work, and this much suffering is alleviated. : While misery can be seen on every hand, wealatydiopley and Inxuty predominates, Habits of extravagance aud wastefulness abound everywhere. Wine flows, delicacies disappear, fine dresses and ‘gorgeous ‘equipagés outnumber the needy army asa hundred to one, The pauper has notfar to go to feast his eyes on all that is desirable in life, He sees it all around him and that.is what causes disBat it ig the way of the world. The-being'who is handicapped by nature; who is . ~ born with crippled limbs, a weak head or a sickly body must go through the world and fulfill the destiny.evidently mapped out for him by the all wise one known as his Cre~ ater, ee WIitpeg, Dow's eaffer tren dyspepsia. Take Sim. destination by team, and there. are about AN IMMENSE PLANT. Over ‘Eighty Tons of Machinery Arrive Here For Sierra County. The largest mining enterprise ever inaugurated in Sierra county is now under good headway. During the past two weeks upwards of eighty tons of mining machinery has arriyed in this city for the mine, which is known as the Mt, Mdriah, and is situated on the old emigrant road above Alleghany and Forest City, about thirty miles from Nevada City. Upwards of forty-five tons ofthe machinery has been forwarded to its thirty-five tons at the depot now awaiting shipment. A portion of ‘it was loaded on for the mine today. On Saturday a dispatch came from the mine requesting two barrels of lime and. some cement to be shipped through by private conveyance with all possible haste to Freeman's Crossing, where a fresh team would -be ready to take the freight to the mine.: Con. Grissell secured a thoroughbrace wagon, and with four of his best. horses hitched to .it, started off with the freight yesterday morning and expected to make the trip by 10 o'clock last night. . It has been impossible to~sécure freight teams here, else all the machinery would have been: on the ground before this time. This new enterprise is controlled principally “by Eastern capitalists and the way they are rushing the work of erecting hoisting works, mill, etc., is just paralyzing to mining men. The mine isa good one and the company propose to get some of the bullion out of it as soon as possible. Other quartz. properties in that section are to be opened up, and within a year there will be a very lively camp in the vicinity of the Mt. Moriah. te NEVADA CITY HOTEL ARRIVALS. A bill for an act in relation to the manufacture and sale of baking powders, to prevent fraud and preserve the public health has been introduced in the Legislature at St, Paul. The bill is intended te prevent the adulteration of baking powders with Alum or Ammonia, imposing proper penalties to enforce the law. Dr. O. S. Binswanger, Professor Chemistry, etc., meiical department University of Oregon, made an examination some time ago of the baking powders found in the Portland stores ; the result of which appeared in the Orzconran, Dr. Binswanger then expressed himself as follows: “Ihave just finished an analysis of the principal baking powders sold in this market, with the following results : ‘‘Heroules.”” This powder contains ammonia. “Crystal.” This'‘powder contains alum, alum. “Silver Star.” This powder contains alum. “White Lily.” This powder contaius alum. “Dr. Price’s Cream Baking Powder.” This ig a pure cream of tartar powder and contains neither alum nor ammonia. It will be observed that Dr. Price’s was found by Dr. Binswanger to be a pure cream of tartar baking pewder and the only brand free from alum, ammonia or any impurity Following is a list of the more widely known brands that Dr. Drew, chemist for the Minneseta State Dairy and Foed Commission, as well as other chemists of high standing have examined and found to contain Alum, some of which contain both Alum and Ammonia. Many of the Alum and ‘Ammonia powders are labeled and advertised as “‘absolutely pure” te mislead the public. The condemned powder given in this list are sold, pretty generally through Oregon and Washington, “Calumet,” ‘Forest City,” ‘Grant's Bon Bon,” ‘‘Hotel,” ‘‘Globe,” ‘*Puritan,”’ “Snow Ball,” “Government,” Se: sae “Loyal,” ‘Columbie,” “Heme,” * onarch,” ‘Unriveled,”’ {‘Chicage Yeast,” ‘*Echo,” ‘Per. fection,” ‘White Kose,” ‘\Hatchet,”” “Crown,” In addition to the above list there are many brands sold with a prize. It is safe to reject all baking powders sold with a prize, as the tests show they are semposed largely of Alum and cost but a few cents a pound, Also refuse any baking powder sold for twenty-five cents a pound, or less ; it is sure to contain Alum. Surely, nothing but their cheapness could induce the public to experiment with these from the questien of the health pr wholesomeness of these condemned powders, and viewed Irom tne # OIG ef puwuvmy alone, a pure cream of tartar baking powder, such as Dr, Binswanger and other high authorities report ‘Dr. < Price’s to be, and from its greater known strength and unquestioned purity, sliould prove more economical to the user in every way. —-+9O@2-o— A Belligerent Stranger. A few weeks ago a hostler at Glenbrook Park, @ stranger; here, assaulted Geerge Irving and used the latter very roughly. Although a warrant was sworn out for him he was not arrested until last Friday, when Marshal Dennen of Grass Valley locked him up. Saturday Constable Dillon of this city went down after the prisoner and brought him to the county jail, Friday . this stranger beat John Irving with a board in a most brutal manner. As soon as Irving gets around he will swear out a warrant for the fellow’s arrest. —_——-—-+0@e--—_—___-_ Military Election.
