DEC. 4, 1895. THE READING ROOM AGAIN. —— Another titepiitnl Offers Some Very ‘Good’ Suggestions. Eprror Transcrtrt: I notice in your last igsue that the question of starting.a reading room is once moré brought up. The same question has been talked of here ‘for years, and several attempts made to keep up a reading room, but all have been failures so far, : There is certainly no doubt but this city needs something of, this kind badly, and as this is the most prosperous town in the State there'is no reason why we should not have one. But the question is asked, how to support one as it should te? There must be some attraction to draw the young men from the thirty or forty saloons which now serve that purpose. There must be something more than a table in a bare room, strewn with a few newspapers and out-of-date magazines, and worn: out and uninteresting bboks. There bas been talk also of starting lit. erary and debating clubs, social clubs, ete. We have already an athletic club, dancing club and others, Why not all these join hands and fourm one common club? With the large membership thus obtained for a atarter, there will be plenty of business men and young men who would be glad to join, With a stable Tae this kind they could secure suitable ters and furnish them well. Se ip You would then have accomplished all purposes at one and the same time. You would have your reading room, literary and debating club, athletic club, and not forgetting the social club, which would be the mainstay of such a gathering. If the men should prove shy at first, what’s the matter with the ‘‘new woman” coming in ? I would like to hear the opinion of others. RESIDENT, _—-—+ e+ -—-—_ —_— Pole Raising. The work of raising the heavy fifty-foot poles of the Electric Power Company is quite a job, but is done rather quickly \ by the use of a ‘‘jim pole,” to which is attached a large block and tackle. The short pole or mast is raised into position by men having long pike poles, and is then securely guyed. -One end of the long rope tat runs through the block is fastened to the permanent mast while it lies flat. A span of horses hitched to the other end of the rope pull the big timber to an upright position, and it is then lowered into the’six-foot hole prepared for it. To put up the rigging and get a pole all set, takes about half an hour, if every thing works all right. A crowd gathers at each raising to watch the modus operandi, —_———_—_—__-ee + —__ Something Delicious. Those Smoked Eels at Wolf’s cash grocéry-are fine.
