BAKING MOST PERFECT MADE. — They were simply midnight brawlers, The standing of their fathers and mothers in the community was such that they thougnt they owned the city. Too many of this class exist.” Left to their own efforts they would sink to the level, or lower, than that of the poor fellow who is’at this moment cleaning up my back yard, It seems to me that in many casea there is a curse upon wealth that is inherited. I have no fear to name individual cases, and if you will allow me I will do so, But these midnight prowlers, I don’t know one of them-~their fathers I do, They had as happy homes as one could wish to enter, Their education was far above the average; but the glitter, the glare of the midnight gas seemed to have a fascination for them, Gambling, as a neces— sary adjunct, followed, a fight took place, shooting was indulged in, and new all the families are plunged in grief, awaiting the result, And, if I cannot ‘‘point a moral or adorn a-tale,” let me, with all the sincerity I am vapable of, tell your younger readers that I have passed through all this vanity; and-as “Sir Charles Coldstream’’ exclaimed, ‘‘there is nothing in it.” Ifene word of mine is the means of directing the thoughts of any of your readers into what I believe to be the proper channels, I am more than repaid for the labor exPended and the meditation which enabled me to place my views before them, The case came* up before Judge Joachimsen, and is still. pending, I do not believe it will ever be prosecuted, It is a case of where one is afraid and the other dare not, All of this may seem stgange; but the ways of the world are beyond the power of ‘‘ken,” The Judge sits woes = on the bench. The case is called, No evi-’ dence, ‘‘Where are the witnesses?" inquires the Judge in a teaty manner, ‘‘None present, your Honor,” says the prosecuting attorney. ‘Call Mr, Blank,” says the Judge. ‘‘No answer, your Honor,” says the officer, ‘Case dismissed,” says the Judge, and that’s the last of it, But, if the pase ends fatally, then stern Justice asserts herself; and woe be to him or her who is the prisoner, It is so in all the other courts—one is like unto another— _ A pure Grape Cream of Tartar Powder. I do not say a word, but, as the Irishman says, .“‘I keep up a divil of a thinking.” And, speaking of courts, puts me in mind to say that saw today Mr. L. H. Brown, now: Clerk of the Supreme Court, but soon to be Secretary of State.) ‘‘Lou,” as I found that his friends call him, is a genial gentleman; and, as I once before re~ marked, he‘is sincere and honest. In outlining to me the methods he ‘intends to pur+ sue in the conduct. of that office, it appears that he has given it the greatest attention. He has written all over the 'Inion, to every State, to get the methods in vogue in each, and where they do not conflict with the laws governing here, he intends to put effect-all the best features that he can get from so many different sources. In fact, he says he will try to be the best Secretary the State has ever, had. He realizes his task; he pays tribute to Mr. Waite and says he willtry and surpass Mr. Waite in the management of the office to which he has been elected. He has a great regard for his ‘‘brother” of the Transcript, Every time I see Mr. Brown ] am more impressed with him, My first call was out of curiosity, as I wanted to see what kind of a man had succeeded in breaking the ‘‘slate.”” He is what, in common parlance, is called ‘‘a good fellow.” That he possesses ability is admitted by all who know him, “Oh, ye of little faith!” Be not deceived, Mr. Budd is not yet the Governor of this State. The ante-bellum: days have passed away, and no bombast, no threats, will prevent a fair count, These are not the days of the fifties. There will be a recount, and the rascals who have tmanipulated the ballots will'see their work go for naught. IT must defer my remarks on the ‘‘Mining Adt” until my next, Warren Mean, Oe Election Officers Arrested. It will be seen from an article published elsewhere in today’s Transcript that some of the election officers in San Francisco have been arrested for neglect of duty, and it is probable that before the investigation is over there will be nearly one hundred persons jailed. The offense complained of is a felony and consists of either refusal or neglect of the accused to certify to or sign the records and papers furnished the election boards at the recent election. In this county the returns from some of the precincts were sent to the County Clerk without being duly certitied to by the election ofticers. This is clearly in violation of the law and the officers of those precincts are liable to arrest and prosecution, & Se ener ten A New Invention.
