MODELING BRING BRINGS MONEY. Utiliteriantam. ia Art, Art. Has of . Late Been Receiving Coatderable: Attention, ; The. pursuit. of art for its own sake is commendable in women. It is’ perhaps more commendable when to the furtherance of art ideals is added the earning of money with which to “keep the pot boiling.” Of late, says an art authority, many of the women students of art; both east and west, poe much attention to the commercial ena of the work. DOG MAIL CARRIER. The Sagecious Animat Waits for the Train and Takes Charge of Matibag. Qut in Kansas, where so many things are different, there is a big St. Bernard mail carrier. He lives in one of the little “cross roads” towns, the post office, is 30 rods from the railroad track. ‘The train, says. the Detroit Free Press, always goes whizzing by at a good rate of speed, whistling as it approaches. Nep hears the whistle and. Hurries.to the crossing and waits for.the coming of the mail. The mail clerk kicks the leather bag out of the door and it falls somewhere in the vicinity of the road. Nep. at once goes to the sack, and carefully taking it by the. middle, so that neither endwill drag on the ground, he deposits ‘bis burden in a-safe place. the weather, andthe whole country knows and is proud ofthe dog mail carrier. ‘Nep is four years.old, is two feet seven inches in height, and weighs 250 pounds. He has no difficulty in carrying the sack, though the mail is often very heavy with the weekly papers from ‘the county. seat, for hie teeth are strong and he has carried over 100 pounds as a test of his strength, In one of the scrimmages before try had been. slapping away for.some time at the Boer trenches, when it was decided to send forward a detachment of Dundonald’s cavalry to try to head jeered at his undignified position. Shortly after the death of Mr. Stewart, in 1876, some of these plans were changed, and instead of making this.a busy industrial city, as he had wished, no factories or manufacturing places of} any description were allowed on the estate, property was restricted and Garden City became a residential town for society. pleted September 14, 1880, and opened with a large scholarship. Great success was achieved, and a lieutenant was appointed by the United States government to teach military science and tac} ties. The cathedral is probably one of the. grandest menuments that — has oh erected to the memory ofa man in It the bullae ‘One of tne. features of is the set of centennial ch cupied the top of Machi Philadelphia exposition in 1876. There are 13 bells, weighing ‘about 20,000 ; pounds, in the belfry. . , Another grand piece of work is the organ. At the time it was built it was in several respects one of the most remarkable in the world, and at the pres-. ent has but two or three rivals. ; In a small octagonal-shaped room off the chancel stands the baptismal font, 4 which is without doubt one of the richest in.the. world, The base and basin are of marble and the cover is of } earved rosewood. Surmounting this is a crown, said tobe of virgin gold, and it is claimed that every precious stone mentioned in the Bible is represented in the settings of this erown. Directly beneath the altar is the cryyt, in which rest the bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Stewart. The crypt is of oc. tagonal shape, four sides bemg taker. up With stained glass windows and the other four being a marble fence with brass. gates. In the eenter of the crypt stands a large marbie urn, bearing the memorial of Alexander T. Stewart and Cornelia M. Stewart. A ere has always been a great deal oubt expressed as to whether the fh of Alexander T. White Sheep of Alaska. This rare, wild white sheep is found nowhere’ in the world but Alaska, and . few specimens for mounting whole have ever. been obtained. This species, named Ovis dalli by Prof. Dall, differs from its cousin, the Rocky. mountain big horn (Ovis montana), in color, O. montana being a dull brown in midsummer, changing to a grayish drab in winter, with a light, ashy-colored patch over the rump all the year, while the O. dalli is snow white at all seasons—in fact, there is not a colored hair on any part of his body. He is not quite so steckily built as our “big horn,” yet more trim and shapely. Two of my specimens stood 42 inches ‘at the shoulder. .His limbs are. not quite so heavy, and his horns will not quite as long, ‘The horns of my largest measured 414%, inches tentrionale, which grows in the crevices of the rock on the sunny slopes of this ‘must endure great hardships to survive the winters of this icy north.
