ish! Doesn’t it preclude
all prospects of competition with a
nightingale, though ours may be the
superior vocalist?’ And those postoffice names! Nature has lavished all
her fayors upon some’ of our southern
mountain parks, but it takes an admirer with strong nerves to get his mail
addressed to Pignut Gove or Greasy
Creek. :
“The very Tartars could do better
than that. ‘Tengris Kahn,’ the ‘Specter
Prince,’ they called their grandest peak
on the Chinese border. It’s probably
nothing but a bleak, treeless crag, and
we have a much prettier sovereign
close by here, gleaming with white
cliffs and glorious in its crown of evergreen pines. But they had ‘to spoil it
and call it the ‘Great Hogback mountain.’ ” noe
“They should have stuck to the Indian names,” laughed our Georgia landlord.
“Yes, in this neighborhood anyhow,”
said ‘the euphonist. “Human specch
of that sort does become a little more
musical as you go farther south. From
Oshkosh to Tallulah is a long step in
the right direction.”

Chinese Barbers.
The barber’s calling is supported by
government. What if his little squat
razor only covers an inch or two at the
time and makes the operation unnecessarily tedious. He has the advantage
of knowing that he represents lawful
authority. He ought never to suffer
from being out of work.
Then his perquisite, the combings,
makes up for natural deficiency. He
can sell at clear profits tails of his own
eollecting and making. Perhaps the
fact that Chinese hair offers little variety in color simplifies this article of
vommerce. The more sable the better.
Children’s heads are shaved in order
that it may be as black and thick as
possible. Black is much more cheerful.
A Chinaman plaits white silk into his
hair when he goes into mourning.
Tales of a tail might be multiplied.
The Chinaman’s is moré expressive
than any that has not the power to wag
with satisfaction or droop with dismay.
For convenience in work it is fastened
up in a coil, but for a man to speak to
his superior without letting it down is
an insult. No Christian would enter
church in this dishabille. A stranger

<1 }EST, DS .1860 BY, N. P. BROWN
TREN tetas
. The late Professor Huxley, who was
as shrewd an observer of men as he
) of nature, once remarked, after
ing into an indiscretion which anhe has no need to say he is sure to
blunder. The truth of the observation .
will hardly be questioned unless by the
very few, if there are any such, who
never say more than there is necessity
for saying. Most of us acknowledge, if
we review our own experience in the
matter, that we have frequently erred
by saying what needed not to be said.
But why is it that people so persistently commit this mistake? In the ordinary small talk of the household or of
society it matters little whether it is
committed or not.
But when serious matters are in
set speech or in correspondence, a case
is frequently spoiled by irrelevance or
redundance. To say what you mean is
comparatively easy; to leave off when
you have said it is difficult and for
many people impossible. In Huxley’s
ease the fault, which he probably did
not often commit, was due neither to
want of clear thinking nor to want of
facility in the use of words. One or
the other or both of these causes will
explain the inability to “keep to the
point” which is usually apparent in
the speech and writing of uneducated
persons. But often, also, the speaker
or writer forgets that extraneous considerations, interesting enough to himself, are of no interest _to those whom
he wishes to convince. .

To the right of the knives should be

On the other side of the plate should
be the forks, tines up, as many as sre
necessary.
The goblet is placed at the upper
tight hand of the plate. :
If wine is served, the glasses may be
arranged in a semicircle in the order in
which they are to be used, starting at
the right.
