cotaeaiimenenedll —— Nevapa City Daity TRANSCRIPT NAT P. BROWN, Proprietor. FRED BE. BROWN, Manager. TERMS OF. oe eee Fy $6 Per Year . By Carrier,Delivered toany vart of the city. 12 1-2c Per Week Issued Every Evening, Sundays Excepted, at Nevada City A GOOD OPPORTUNITY TO ADVERTISE CALIFORNIA A Timely Suggestion to Those About to Purchase Holiday Gifts. HE PEOPLE OF NEVADA CITY, with thousands of others in our county and State, will send this year to their friends and relatives in the East and European countries a great multitude of Christmas and New Year remembrances. These gifts will be scattered far and wide and will be everywhere valued and treasured as keepsakes and will continually attract the attention of those to whom they are sent, as well as many others to whom they will be shown from time to time. In the aggregate their cost will amount toa large sum, so that the trade, both in its scope and its worth, is a matter of no small importance. If the majority of the Christmas presents sent from California to other lands were made up of California products there would be a double benefit to the community. In the first place the demand would give a good market for the home industries that produce the article, and, in the second place, the distribution of them through so wide an area of country would materially assist in developing a market for them. It is true that no individual is going to send many such presents, and each therefore may think it will not matter whether he or she sends California articles or not, but the subject should be considered as a whole and not with respect to a single person. Here is an opportunity of making known the_merit of hundreds of articles of California production, and all our citizens should mutually agree to do their share in making the most of it, It is well known that the Christmas trade is one of the largest of the year. So much money is expended in holiday novelties that a season of almost universal economy follows as soon as the holidays are over. Trade in nearly all lines becomes dull and it is some time before business resumes its normal activity. From that fact we may derive some conception of the vast amount of money expended in the Christmas trade, and most of it goes for presents of one kind or another. California imports an immense line of Christmas goods from the East and from Europe, while her exports of such goods are much less than they ought to be. A search in our local business houses will bring to light a number of beautiful and useful articles which would well advertise the resources of our State and make appropriate holiday gifts. Why not select these novelties when looking about for presents to send to the far-away friends or relatives at Christmas time—or at any time of the year when gifts are sent? If this rule was universally observed, there are many people who thus would be attracted to this land of wonderful resources, simply through the instrumentality of such novelties and the desire to see more of California and its productions. It is not aueosaey: to send to San Francisco to secure these appropriate gifts. Our local merchants carry in stock and endless variety of such articles, beautiful, useful and ornamental, An inspection of the various holiday stocks of our dealers will surprise you in this regard, this year. Let everyone do his part toward doing his best by booming the market for California productions, both personally and by using his influence in getting others to do the same. Siocks, Bonds, Lic. After the above sale he went over to Hyman & Oo.’s Store, where the great sacrifive sale is going on, and as he looked into one of the windows he saw sweaters marked 15 cents and 60 cents which was about one-half the price he was paying for the same articles to the wholesale dealers in San Francisco. _He bought one hundred and one of them, and a trunk, paid the cash down, and had the lot shipped to his store in Sacramento. He wae astonished at the low prices ranging at this establishment at the present time, and said “if he had a longer time to stay he would select a lot of the goods for his Sacramento store, as he could buy almost everything he laid his eyes on cheaper than hs could below, and that either people here did not appreciate the low prices else they had a supply.” ————--+@e o— —— ——— National Hotel DINNER SUNDAY, DECEMBER 6.
