LOCAL I}
California.
Irving M. Scott has ~been calling attention to the fact that California should do
more of her own manufacturing. Virtually we are 15,000 miles from our present
markets for much of our products, We
may, indeed we must, send our fresh fruits
across the country by rail, and some other
articles take tlie same course. Our wheat,
however, and much of our other exports go
by Cape Horn. Saying nothing about California mavufactures, it is an absurdity to
send wheat 15,000 miles to a maket and import ham and bacon, especially at present
prices. Farmers in the Mississppi and
Missouri valleys this year found thatit pays
to feed wheat to hogs. Again, we ship
more wheat and less flour than a sound

through the catalogue of exports and imports, Meantime there is a complaint for
want of openings for the industry of our
people,” A change m.our conditions of local
transportation would have material effect
on this state of affairs. It would stimulate
activity in all lines of business. It would
exercise a specific influence upon local industries by facilitating loéal exchanges, It
The Fisherman’s Wife and the Ocean
WIFE.
Does man love God who gave him life?
Roll, Ocean, roll !
Is there no end of earthly strife *.
Roll, Ovean, roll !
The fleets that sweep thy crested foam
Hear not thy sigh, hear not thy moan,
While on the rock-bound shore alone,
. I watch and wait and weep.
OCEAN,
Man loveth not his gracious God.
ves Weep, sinner, weep.
All earthly strife ends with the sod.
Weep, sinner, weep.
Man’s faults are many,, virtues few;
A life of trouble he lives to rue,
And when his earthly toil is through,
@od grant. him peace and rest.
wIVk,
If man’s without and God’s within,
Roll, Ocean, roll !
How can His truth reward our sin ?
Rol, Ocean, roll !
O may Thy wisdom give me light
“To see beyond earth's coming night,
And may I hear how man’s sad plight
By God is overcome.
OCFAN,
Almighty God in love made all,
Hope, sinner, hope !
And without Him shall none fall,
Hope, sinner, hope !
And when man fell God gave His son
To prove to man what man had done,
And when his race op earth was run
He died for all mankind,
: WIFE.
O wondrous wisdom, wondrous Deep.
Roll, Ocean, roll !
His lovey hath saved me and shall keep,
Roll, Ocean, roll,
All mankind by night, by day,
Now—forever—and for—aye;
And our Shepherd is the way.
Roll, Ocean, roll !

Maturing Bonds.
—
‘Wasuincton, Dec. 5,—Within the next
menth the Government will be called upon
to pay $2,362,000 of the Central Pacific railroad bonds. It will be the first payment
made by the Government on these bonds.
They ran for long terms, and are now about
to mature.
Chairman Reilly of the Committee on
Pacific Railroads does not believe a solution
of the Pacific railroad debt-can be reached
at the present short session of Congress.
The Central Pacific Company has in the
treasury to the credit of its sinking fund
$5,070,209, and the question has arisen
whether the Government could not approis the home trade that is the most profitable
despite the theories af Rree Teaders who
look abroad for commercial, prosperity.
Tr nsportation is a necessary evil, and the
more we can cut it down by trading with
oir neighbors, inst zad of people across the
C mtinent or the ocean, the better off we
shall become.
