Scott has ~been calling attention to the fact that California should do more of her own manufacturing. Virtually we are 15,000 miles from our present markets for much of our products, We may, indeed we must, send our fresh fruits across the country by rail, and some other articles take tlie same course. Our wheat, however, and much of our other exports go by Cape Horn. Saying nothing about California mavufactures, it is an absurdity to send wheat 15,000 miles to a maket and import ham and bacon, especially at present prices. Farmers in the Mississppi and Missouri valleys this year found thatit pays to feed wheat to hogs. It will be the first payment made by the Government on these bonds. They ran for long terms, and are now about to mature. Chairman Reilly of the Committee on Pacific Railroads does not believe a solution of the Pacific railroad debt-can be reached at the present short session of Congress. The Central Pacific Company has in the treasury to the credit of its sinking fund $5,070,209, and the question has arisen whether the Government could not approis the home trade that is the most profitable despite the theories af Rree Teaders who look abroad for commercial, prosperity.
