Deal of Camptonville, well known to many of our people, and always heretofore regarded asa good citizen, pleaded gullty to a charge of committing rape, in. the Superigr: Court at Marysville on Thursday last. Judge Davis in passing sentence sta‘ted that the crime of rape on Daisy F. Holeomb, she being unmarried and under the age of 16 years, Deal had made a statement to the Oourt. Court believed the defendant’s statement that he did not know that his relations with the girl wore of a crimabandoned woman. But that it was a. law of this State that such relations arecriminal, and the age limit had been raised from 14 to 16 years. Of course Daisy Holcomb was a child, as she was only I4years old, even if she was bad. She had been made bad by men. Agirlof her ege has but little experience. Uer associations had not been good and she had not had the advantage of being directed in the right path by a good father or a good mother. It was no wonder that girls go wrong when they had no one to advise them. It wasa bad state of affairs when a girl of 14 yeara can seduce a man of 72 years of age. Men of such age ought to encourage young girls tolead a good life; not a bad one. Todo otherwise is a weakness The crime of rape was generally perpetrated accompanied by violence, but in this case there had been no vio lence used. It was u crime simply because the girl was under age. In this case the Court thought that justice would be satisfied with the minimum punishment, and if the prisoner received all the credits: he would only have to serve less than four years in all. The Court would be glad to see him spend the remainder of his life, after bis term had expired, in peace. The Judge ordered that the prisoner be confined in San Quentin for five years. District Attorney McDaniel has not stated. that other arrests are tobe made. About a dozen people, mostly married: men in Camptonville, have been accused by Deal, of the same act with the girl, which may result, at least, in several divorce cases, Astounding Discovery. From Coopersville, Mich., comes word of a wonderful discovery. of a leasant taeting liquid that when used Eanes retiring by any one troubled with a bad cough always. ensures a good night’s rest, “It will soon cure the congh too,” writes Mrs. 8.
