THE TRANSCRIPT . Battie Sept ta NEVADA CITY, NEVADA CO., CALIFORNIA "BROWN & CALKINS. = Proprietors TUESDAY.... ... DEC. 8, 1896. ‘WILL START UP TOMORROW. Is in Running Order -mine at the Milliken ranch is com“pleted and will be started up tomorrow. The works are lecated on the south side of the Washington ridge, between the Snow Mountain and Mananita ditches, and about a mile and a . half from this city. A Pelton water wheel will drive the machinery. Everything bas been put up in good shape, and the test made this afternoon was very satisfactory. ‘The double compartment shaft is 51¢x9 feet in the clear, and is already down some distance. A contract has been let to sink it 500 feet, and work will be rushed as fast as possible, three shifts of eight hours each being employed. Superintendent Durbin thinks the channel will be struck in from 750 to 900 feet. For the present the working force will be from eight to ten men only, but this will be increased as soon -as there is room for more men to work. The mine is owned by Poorman & Hastings. Although a new venture there is.every reason to believe that, judging from developments made in other mines’on the same channel and in the same locality, it will prove a successful enterprise. It is the opinion of miners who have worked on this channel that the portion owned by the above company is one of the richest, and that very rich gravel will be found as soon as the channel is struck. Catlin of the Superior Court of Sacramento county is a candidate for the position made vacant in the Supreme Court Commissioners by the death of Judge Van Clief. The appointment is made by the Supreme Court. It is said that Judge Catlin is sure of having the backing of Supreme Justice Beatty and Justices Van Fleet and McFarland, former Sacramentans, whose influence will go a long way towards securing him the prize. The office pays $6000 a year—the same pay as the Supreme Justice receives.
