NOT SO BAD AS PAINTED. oe ee Jndge Hinkson of Sacramento Talks 00) Cu. gr. have returned from Shasta the Slickens Qusetion. Last evening’s Sacramento Bee says: Attorney A. C. Hinkson made an interesting statement before the Chamber of Commerce last night that was very decidedly at variance with all preconfield is here visiting her sister, Mrs. A. R. Morrison. ceived notions of the danger done by hydreulic mining in filling up the. Sacramento River. The statement was that the river had not filled ap with: ‘sedimentin the past fifty years to an average extent greater than two feet. Sacramento school children are taught that in early days, before there was any hydraulic mining and before there were any levees protecting the, land along the Sacramento River, ocean steamers were wont to ascend to far above Sacramento, and it was a us. . ual sight to see several of these large craft.tied up to the water front. Oldtimers tell of when the river was almost as clear as crystal, and so deep that large vessels could navigate it at any time of year, One pioneer states that before the days of levees he stood at what is now the foot of N street and looked down the natural embankment to the surface of the water more than a dozen feet below, while it is said that the surface of the river to-day is abou! a dozen feet above the level of the city. It was owing to the noteriety of these things that Hinkson’s are rota was received with surprise. “I paid a visit to Major Heuer in San Franeisco not long ago,” Hinkeon said, “and spent an entire forenoon in his office talking about .the Sacramento River.’ He had three maps there showing surveys made of the river in 1851, 1870 and 1895. These maps showed that the bottom of the river had remained practically unchanged. The same bars and shoals were shown to be present to-day that were present in early days. These bars and shoals had ofcourse filled in to a great extent, but the average fill throughout the river would not exceed two feet. I, asked Major Heuer about the matter and. he said that the improvement of the bed ter than was generally believed. “He said that the filling in of the sandbars had dammed up the water of Dec. 8, 1899) mine is in town. ing from San Francisco. this evening from San Francisco. county. went to Oakland today where his wife is visiting. grant Gap, returued home today after a short visit here. this afternoon. fell there this morning. The Singing of Arthur Donaldson Who Plays “Yon Youson.’” A curious feature about “Yon Yonson” which comes to the theater at this city on Friday evening of next week under the direction of Thall & Kennedy, is that its popularity seems to increase with each successive season that it is on the road. “Yon Yonson” is undeniably one of the most thrilling stories that is told upon the stage togay. And its scenes, which are laid in the lumber camps, are particularly interesting both to the theater-goers who are familiar with them and aiso to these to whom they are a povelty. The great scene of the play isin the second act and represents most faithfully a “log jam.” It issaid to be one of the most realistic scenes ever put upon the stage and to those who are familiar with the timber cutting country, it is especially interesting. The company which Messrs. Thall & Kennedy have engaged for “Yon Yonson” is said to be the strongest that has ever been seen in the play. The title role is played by Arthur Donaldson, one of the best barytones in the country, and one of the features of his performance will be his singing of Swedish folk songs in their original language. Another member of the company who is a player of note is Annie Mack Berlein, who plays the Widow Laflin. Annie Mack Berlein, . was for years the Gretchen with Joseph Jefferson and is one of the best charac. » ter.women in the dramatic profession. Besides these two, there are in the company Beatrice Norman, Grace Hazard, Edith Hah, E. J. Mack, E. Guy Spangler, Clinton Maynard, Sidney Craven, George Lund, William Konst,\ and the celebrated Lumbermen’s Quartette.
