J. Rector called the Beckman, the German Cyclone, and mt vine, are both being put through ‘an heroic course of training for next Monday night’s fight at Armory hall. Beckman has been a slight favorite so far in the betting, but this is probably due to the fact that he has had some experience in the ring rather than that he presents pre-eminent points over Gilmore. The latter is an unknown factor as yet, but some who have seen him &t/ work in his training quarters predict.that he will prove a surprise. He is as active as a cat on his feet, has abnormal reach, and his wind never fails him. It remains to be seen whether he has the ability to: infuse enough’ steam into his blows to have -any damaging effect on the man who dast Spring made such a gallant fight with that wiry and nervy pug, Prof. Nichols, A Handsome Display. ‘The stock of furniture just received direct from the East by James Kinkead of Commercial street is attracting much attention because of its richness and the remarkably low prices at which it is offered. It embraces the very’ latest styles and is of the best quality throughout. A piece or two of this elegant furniture would make an accepted and useful holiday gift for most anybody. Monday Might. ’ Marchie, the city street superintendent, was now ex-officio heaith officer, and was supposed to look after these matters' Chairman Rector suggested that this was one of the most important committees, and it should usa every endeavor to better the sanitary condition of the city. F. E. Wadsworth of the committee said that many citizens. were dilatory in keeping their premises ina cleanly condition, and required constant prodding in order to get them to do what they should. He called attention to the fuct that many parts of the city are in an unspeakably filthy condition. President Fred Zeitler appeared at this juncture and took the chair. The question of membership was discussed. Oaptain Nihell of the membership committee said he and his associates felt that small dues, perhaps in the way of occasional assessments, should be collected from all members, and Mr. Rector heartily. endorsed the idea. The first named gentleman recommended. that the committees on laws and membership be asked to jointly prepare a by-law to provide for the. levying of assessments when necessary, said measure to be presented the second Wednesday in January for approval or rejection On motion of Mr, Englebright it was so ordered. W. W. Waggoner and Wm. H. Martin of the street committee made a report showing that much work had been done on the streets. They also made reports showing the expenditures. Mr. Martin had, as was indicated by the reports, expended personally over $300 in improving the road from the city to the. Mayflower mine where plenty of rock for macadamizing can be obtained logs pagwmomt oF Ch oo Ok. Se ae . ing the rock. A warrant for $125 was drawn in favor of the street superintendent with which to pay for rockbreaking. Captain Nibell thought it would be a good idea for the local papers to issue aspecial edition during the holidays» showing the good work done so far by the Board of Trade and setting forth the resources and possibilities of the city and county. 1897. EST. IN 1860 BY N. P. BROWN & CO, Mr. Rector thought it a'good idea to ‘the supervision of the street committes, and invite the residents ofthe various districts to contribute work or money in improving the streets and roads of their repractical, for the reason that it is difficult to get many property owners to do a stroke of work voluntarily. J.J. Jackson thought the City Trusthis Board were entitled to gratitude for what they had done towards repairing. streets, On motion the meeting unanimo' adopted a resolution’ apProving the action’ of the’ Trustees in appointing a street superintendent and applauding the good work accomplished under their on. The exhibit committee reported that in case a fair should be held in San Francisco during the golden jubilee, and the Board of Trade deemed it advisable to have a display of Nevada county minerals and, products, they would use every to colléct for it a creditable display. On motion of Mr. Englebright, seconded by Mr. Wadsworth, the following was unanimously adopted : “Resolved, That the committee on exhibits be uested to confer with the Board of County Supervisors regarding a mineral exhibit at the golden jubilee fair in San we urge the Supervisors to make an appeor oo to assist the same if a fair C) Rector, Mr. Wadsworth, President Zeitler and others spoke on this subject. Dear Sir:—I have received the joint letter of yourself and Messrs. Muller and Blackwell in regard to the Piute Indian War Claims. This pill has already been favorably reported to the Senate in this Congress, and I have every hope that the répresentatives from the West will be able te secure its passage in the House. I shall do all I possibly can to secure early action upon it. I realize it has taken a long time to secure the payment of these claims. The claims are just and ought to be paid.
