Financlally speaking, says the
Marysville Appeal, if John Martin
lives but a few years longer he will
then be one of the most prominent figures on the Pacific Coast. ~ :
Everything to which he turns, his
attention prospers; every enterprise
which he takes up succeeds. :
From a lowly beginning he has
now reached a brilliant height and.
the fature still spreads out bright before him. SS ea
It is not necessary for. any paper to
tell its readers who Jobn Martin is.
Everybody in this section of California knows the man and ‘the great
work which he was so instrumental
in carrying through to its present
great dimensions. 5
From away up on the Yuba run the

Council Chamber’ tonight. the plains, through the valleys and
across the straits of Oarquinez to
Oakland, giving out light and power
not only in that city but in fifteen or
twenty towns along the way.
With the success of this great enterprise John Martin had a great deal to
do. But several months ago he sev_ered connection with the Bay Oounties
Company to organize a company of
his own, and now he is furnishing the
electric current to Grass Valley, Nevada City, Marysville, Chico,Colusa,
Napa, Santa Rosa and half a dozen
other cities.
It took a strong brain to conceive
the plan which Mr. Martin thought
out and stout heart to carry it
through; but he has both, And today
he stands forth a conspicuous and
honored figure in Oalifornia life for
the enterprise he has given to the
State.
‘Men Iike John Martin are invaluable. What the pioneers were to the
early settlement of California personalities such as his are now to the industrial development of this rich
commonwealth. Their enterprise enrich not only themselves but the public. Whole communities feel the impulee of their well-directed energies.

The power which John Martin sends
to fourteen:towns will not only light
up and furnish power to these fortunate localities and) make them enlarge and prosper but it will also
serve to develop the intermediate
country by furnishing to thesfarmer
the means to irrigate his land,at a
minimum of cost and to the miner the
means to run his mill. It will stimulate enterprise and create industry.
If all honor, then, fs due to the man
who makes to grow one blade of grass
where none grew before, how much
more honor is due to such a man as
John Martin, who uplifts whole sections and brings prosperity in his
wake? ~
This earnest tribute to Mr. Martin’s
sterling worth is called out by the
latest undertaking in which he is engaged—the giant of them all. .
In brief, itis proposed to manufacture gas from oil residuum down at
Bakersfield and pipe itj, clear to San
_. Francisco, supplying it .not only to
that city but to others enroute. The
gas so manufactured costs but a trifle
and is of a splendid quality. Once
piped to San Francisco the companies
now in that city could not begin to
compete. It would simply mean their
retirement from business, or absorption by the new concern, whith is
practically the same thing.
