Widow of the Murered Barbet Takes
Her Own Life,
“Who shot F. M. Smith?” This quesi tion has bothered the police of Sacramento ever since his lifeless body was
examined by the Ceroner, Another
chapter has been added to the mystery, according to a press dispatch
from Los Angeles, and the murdered
man’s wife now also lies cold in death
at Los Angeles, the victim of. her own
hands. The dispatch says the woman’s
lifeless body was foundin a room in
the Naba hotel yesterday afternoon.
It will be rémembered that Mr.
Smith, who recently lived here with
his wife and conducted the:barber
shop at the Union Hotel, was shot
down at Sacramento a week ago yesterday when returniag from spending
the afternoon fishing. His wife, who
was with him at the time, told the police that a man had jumped from the
brush and commanded them to “throw
up their hands” and while the highwayman was watching her husband
she ran away. She had gone but a
few steps when a shot was fired and
when she~ returned a few moments
later with some men she met they
found ber husband dead and that his
pocket book containing about $75 was
gone. The police gathered evidence in
the case which they did not make puband which led them to. believe that
the killing was for another purpose
than robbery. Yet their evidence was
not sufficiently strong to justify the
arrest of anyone for the murder though
it is thought by many that the woman did not tell all she knew about
the case. Unless she left an explaining letter the mystery’ is now deeper
than ever and will probably never be
solved.
