Gears Stewart . Kills His Wife, Tha, Commits onic The sain Murderer of ats Lord, Near Grass Valley, in 4889, Tho Democrat, published ‘at Montague \. Texas, in its issue of January 24th, contains an account of a murder and suicide committed three miles below Forestburg, in the same county, onthe I7th ‘of. January. George Stewart, who at: one time visited this county, and who was suspected of having murdered a girl named Flossy Lord, on a.ranch a sbort distance below Grass Valley, six-or seven ‘years ago, killed his wife'and then took ‘his own life. He also badly wounded his father-in-law. About a week previous to the killings Stewart went to a neighboring town aid on his return a couple of days later found that his wife had gone to her father’s home and intended to remain there. She told Stewart that she never expected to live with him again. . Nothing more took place between them until the day of the killing; but, as is shown by his letters, the matter was being On the day of the killing Stewart stole a 38-calibre Colt’s revolver from a store and went to the home of his father-in-law, Mr. Hudson, where his wife was, and began a conversation with her. .She repeated again that she would never live with him and he drew the pistol and shot her in the sk oulder. At this juncture Mr, Hudson caught him, aud the woman ran:from the house and hid. ’ in’a thicket abouttifty yards away, Stewart told the old man, to turn him loose or he would shoot him, arid -his demand not being obeyed he shot Hudson in the face, the ball striking his cheek bone, glancing around and lodging im his neck. After getting loose he ran out in the direction his wife had gone, and failing to sée her threatened to shoot a child that was in the yard if it did not tell him which way she went, and the child pointed io the direction of the thicket, _He went’ there, with his horn up in the tree, and the crowd . to the United States Marshal of Missouri to was traced to the Indian Territory and thence to Texas, the Sheriff here keeping officials to watch him. times with the noted desperadoes Bill Dalton, Pearl Star and others, . I.was blamed of-killing--Florence Lord in Grass Valley on June 19, 1889, but God knows I am not guilty, although I have been a bad bey. I would like for you to ablish this in the San’ Franciseé Chroni¢le,Ban Francisco, Cal., so my folks could get hold of it. It has been done by a woman by the name of (naming the womam), I would kill her, too, but I want her to suffer the balance of her life, and if there is any.such thing as ya! back I AeA haunt her the balance of ‘her life. So good bye to all. From a good boy, GrorGE STEWART. Stewart was in Nevada county at the time Florence, or ‘‘Flossy” Lord was killed. He was well acquainted with her and visited the ranch a short time before the tragedy: occurred. There was @ mystery ‘surrounding the case that has never ‘been. solved satisfactorily. At the time it -was supposed by many that the girl committed suicide, while others believed that she had. been assassinated. . Bullet holes found in the porch timbers and in the side of the house gave rise to the theory that she had been fired at two or three times by another person. It was known that Stewart had been’at the duce the girl to run away with him, which she refused to do, ‘They .quarreled and Stewart leftin anger. Shortly before the tragedy, if we remember rightly, Flossy received a threatening letter. ‘The supposition was that the letter was froin Stewart, and that he afterwards appeared at the ranch, watching‘an opportnnity when the girl was alone, again implored her to leave home and go with him, and when she still refused shot her as she was running from himgsPhere. was.no -witness to say that] ;, Stewart committed the crime or even that he had been seen in the neighborhood since he left after the first quarrel. Efforts were made to find a clew that would fasten: the ‘deed upon Stewart, but the evidence against him was mostly in the nature of conjectures, and therefore he was never tried for the crime. j About three years ago Sheriff Douglass received a letter. from Stewart, who was then in Missouri, in which.the latter. said he had been accused of the murder of Flossy Lord, buf that. he was not guilty and: in-}° tended’ to come back here and prove his innocence, Sheriff Douglass at once wrote keep an eye on Stewart, From Missouri he track of him all the time and notifying the While in that section of the country he was associated at Tothe U. 8. But Stewart would not do this, . zl He was The bodies of Stewart and his wife were yault, Although Stewart, in the letter written the day before he killed his wife and committed suicide, denied that he killed the Lord girl, his career showed him to be a desperate man, and many will ‘now believe more strongly than ever that he did kill the young girl, whose dead body was found apon the porch of her t father’ 8 house, Methedist Church.
